Successful recipients who wish to further develop their teaching skills and contribute to pedagogical developments in their discipline may also be considered for activities such as tutorials, laboratory demonstrations, marking and similar teaching related work for which they will receive additional payment over and above the award granted under this scheme. What is funded? Maynooth University Doctoral €10,000 Scholarship €9,000 €1,000 full fees 1 in Arts, Celtic Studies & Philosophy. 3 in Social Sciences. 6 in Science & Engineering. 1 under the Maynooth Access Programme (MAP) Maynooth University Doctoral Fee Waiver Scholarship n/a n/a full fees 5 in Arts, Celtic Studies & Philosophy. 4 in Social Sciences. Duration Maximum duration of MU Doctoral €18,000 and €10,000 scholarships is four years. Maximum duration of MU Doctoral Fee Waiver scholarship is four years for award holders studying full time and six years for award holders studying part time. Eligibility The first and second award types are only available for applicants who intend to pursue a full-time PhD at MU by either registering initially for a research master’s as the start of a PhD - track programme that designates its research master’s as a PhD track or by registering directly for a PhD programme. The third award is available to applicants who intend to pursue either a doctoral degree or a professional doctorate. Mode of study Only full-time students are eligible for the €18,000 and €10,000 scholarships. Full-time and part-time students are eligible for the Fee Waiver award. c) Academic qualifications The minimum standards for eligibility for MU John and Pat Hume doctoral awards of any type are • A first class honours bachelor’s degree or an upper second-class honours primary degree with a first in the proposed discipline (as one subject of a double honours primary degree, or as the major or minor subject of a major/minor honours primary degree) • If the applicant does not have a first class honours bachelor’s degree, or an upper second-class honours master’s primary degree with a first in the proposed discipline (as one subject of a double honours primary degree, or as the major or minor subject of a major/minor honours primary degree), they must possess a first class or upper second-class honours master’s degree • If an applicant holds an ungraded masters, they must possess a minimum of an upper second-class honours bachelor’s degree  In the Faculty of Science and Engineering, applicants holding an upper second-class overall single honours primary degree with a first in their final research project are eligible. Degrees may be from Ireland, the EU or from any overseas university. Equivalency of degrees awarded and results obtained outside of Ireland will be determined by the Dean of Graduate Studies. In certain cases, where a higher diploma operates as a master’s qualifier, the higher diploma result can be considered equivalent to a primary degree. Applicants in the final year of the qualifying degree apply on the basis of expected results.
