Princeton, N.J. (March 21, 2008) ?This press release also available in Chinese (PDF) and Spanish (PDF).

Educational Testing Service, the U.S.-based creators of the TOEFL? (Test of English as a Foreign Language?) and TOEIC? (Test of English for International Communication?) tests, reports that a record 6.2 million students and business people registered to take its well-known English tests in 2007.

Registrations for both the TOEFL and TOEIC tests increased over 2006. Much of the increase is due to increased popularity of these tests worldwide and a growing need for English-language proficiency in academic and workplace environments.

Interest among universities and colleges wishing to join the family of TOEFL score users also grew as more than 850 institutions joined the list of those that recognize and trust TOEFL scores. ETS also expanded its Internet testing network to more than 4,300 centers worldwide, by far the most extensive such network in the world. The TOEFL test is currently accepted by over 6,000 universities in 110 countries, more than three times the number of any other English proficiency test.

The new TOEIC? Speaking and Writing tests have been added to complement the TOEIC? Listening and Reading tests. Together, they provide a reliable measurement of all four English-language communication skills. More than 8,000 corporations in 90 countries rely on the TOEIC tests.

"After many decades, the English proficiency tests created by ETS remain the most widely used and respected tests in the world for academic and business purposes," says Paul A. Ramsey, Senior Vice President of ETS's Global Division. "From university officials to corporate leaders, the TOEFL and TOEIC tests set the standard by which English-language exams are judged."
