In addition, five runner-up awards of $5,000 will be awarded. Both freshman and transfer students are eligible to apply. In rewarding exceptional achievement, the College seeks to honor students who will enrich our community of learners as they embody the high value we place on excellence. Special consideration will be given to students who demonstrate innovative, motivational leadership that has impacted their schools, workplaces, or communities. Consideration will also be given to applicants who have demonstrated resilience in the face of hardships, disability, difficult personal situations, or other disadvantage. Most of these students attend on athletic and academic scholarships ranging from $3000 to $28,000 per year. Our Center for Applied Studies in English students receive a ½ tuition discount while they are learning English in preparation for university classes. Undergraduate students can receive scholarships based on TOEFL, ACT, or SAT scores or for their scores from our intensive English program. GPD seeks to promote social science research on processes of social, political and economic transformation in the developing world with a special focus on the persistent problem of inequality. Inequalities of well-being and opportunity represent the most difficult and persistent obstacles to promoting equitable, democratic and sustainable development. As the problems of development and inequality become ever more complex and global, GPD aims to provide graduate students with the interdisciplinary skills necessary for innovative research. This represents a record high number of international students in the United States. This is the fifth consecutive year that Open Doors figures show growth in the total number of international students, and there are now 32 percent more international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities than there were a decade ago.
