2016 Yale Young Global Scholars

Recommended Posts

The Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS) has launched its application for Summer 2016, and will offer six different sessions for talented high school students. The program continues to expand in response to the significant interest expressed by thousands of talented high school students in the United States and abroad. The new sessions also reflect Yale University’s core strengths and deep commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

YYGS is an academic enrichment and leadership development program that brings together outstanding high school students from around the world for intensive two-week sessions on the Yale campus. In 2015, YYGS hosted 600 students, who represented 92 different countries and 50 U.S. states and territories. Students in YYGS attended lectures from distinguished Yale faculty, participated in small seminars led by Yale graduate and undergraduate students, and conducted group research projects which they presented at the end of their session.

YYGS offered three unique sessions during 2015, beginning with its two flagship programs, Politics, Law & Economics (PLE) and International Affairs & Security (IAS) and concluding with Science, Policy & Innovation (SPI), a novel session aimed at students interested in bridging the gap between politics and the scientific community. The program received 2,275 for these three sessions, and admission was highly competitive.

As YYGS expands its academic offerings, it hopes to cater to an even broader range of talented young individuals and bring in even more diversity, talent, and unique perspectives to the Yale campus. “The Yale Young Global Scholars program continues to be an incredible opportunity for Yale students and faculty to engage with the next generation of high school student leaders,” said Ted Wittenstein, Executive Director of YYGS. “These new sessions of academic content create exciting opportunities to highlight the best that Yale has to offer across the University.”

New STEM Sessions

For the first time ever, YYGS will offer the following sessions with an increased focus on themes from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM):

  • Applied Science & Engineering

  • Biological & Biomedical Science

  • Sustainability, Energy, & Environment

  • Technology, Innovation, & Entrepreneurship

All of these sessions will continue to focus on the interaction of science and policy, offering slightly more directed content to better showcase the resources of Yale University and provide more opportunities for students to interact with researchers and faculty at the cutting edge of their respective fields. With an emphasis on developing scientific citizenship, the focus of these sessions will be to teach students how to effectively convey complex ideas to non-expert audiences, and to better understand the complex relationship between science and policymaking.

In these sessions, students will also have the opportunity to tour Yale labs as well as core facilities including the Yale center for Proteomics & Genomics, the Center for Engineering Innovation & Design, and the research branch of the Peabody Natural History Museum.

Although these sessions offer more targeted scientific content, all students who show curiosity about the practice and application of science are encouraged to apply.
