The Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics (CAAM) at Rice University seeks applications for the position of Department Chair. The CAAM Department at Rice is recognized as a national leader in research and graduate and undergraduate education.

The Department offers an undergraduate B.A. degree in CAAM, as well as an undergraduate minor. Graduate programs include a professional course-based Master’s in Computational Science and Engineering (MCSE, in conjunction with Departments of Statistics and Computer Science), a professional course-based Master’s in CAAM (MCAAM), and a course- and research-based Master of Arts (M.A.) and doctorate (Ph.D.) in CAAM. Research areas include numerical analysis, operations research, optimization, differential equations, and scientific computing.

The Department currently has 11 (tenured/tenure-track) full-time faculty members, 2 research faculty members, several adjunct faculty members/lecturers, 14 research staff members including post-doctoral scholars, 37 graduate students, 38 undergraduate majors, and 20 undergraduate minors. The successful candidate will be an outstanding scholar noted for leadership in computational and applied mathematics broadly interpreted, demonstrate a proven track record of instruction and mentoring at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and be committed to service of their academic community. The candidate must have qualifications, including a doctoral degree in an appropriate field, commensurate with being appointed a tenured full professor at Rice University.

Beyond academic qualifications, the successful candidate will have the creative strategic visioning skills necessary to help define the Department and lead it to attainment of its goals. This individual will embrace that the Department’s research and educational objectives cross disciplinary lines, both internal and external to the University. The individual will create and exploit connections to the local community including with industry, improve departmental visibility, and lead departmental development efforts.

The CAAM department at Rice is housed in the Brown School of Engineering (SOE), which consists of nine academic departments, including CAAM. Faculty in the SOE are active educators and researchers, with 10 of the current 121 faculty members being a member of one of the National Academies. Approximately 40% of the Rice undergraduate population major in one of the engineering programs, and over half of Rice’s graduate population is pursuing degrees in the SOE.

Rice University, located in Houston, Texas, is the second-smallest member of the Association of American Universities, with an undergraduate enrollment just under 4,000 and a graduate enrollment of just under 2,700. Beyond the Brown SOE, Rice is home to six additional academic schools (Architecture, Business, Continuing Studies, Humanities, Music, and Social Sciences). Regardless of discipline, faculty and staff at Rice University are committed to preparing students for lives that contribute to the generation of unconventional wisdom.

Applications should contain a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae containing a list of publications, statements of research and teaching interests, and a statement regarding leadership experience and/or philosophy.
