Advertising institute: JSC - Jülich Supercomputing Centre
Reference number: D026/2018, Computer science, mathematics

The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) operates one of the most powerful computer systems for scientific and technical applications in Europe and makes it available for research purposes to scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich, in Germany, and throughout Europe. Important fields of the work of the “mathematics and education” department at JSC include mathematical modelling and the development and optimization of innovative numerical methods and algorithms on massively parallel supercomputers.

We are now looking to recruit a

PhD student in the field of computer science

Your Tasks:

  • extending and optimizing our C++ tasking framework for current and future HPC hardware (GPUs, Power, ARM)
  • extending message passing layer to support different low-level communication libraries
  • application to space-time multigrid solvers and the FMM
  • supervision of students and trainees

Your Profile:

  • university degree in the field of computer science or mathematics
  • Long-standing C++ programming experience, including a profound understanding of template metaprogramming
  • interest in C++-based tasking approaches and low-level performance optimizations
  • no fear of numerical methods, in particular iterative solvers and time-stepping schemes
  • social competence and good communication skills for collaborative work in and with interdisciplinary teams
  • excellent command of written and spoken English, command of German is helpful but not mandatory

Our Offer:

  • PhD degree in 3 years: comprehensive supervision and a focussed work plan in cooperation with one of our partner universities
  • embedding of the topic into the interdisciplinary research setting of the Joint Laboratory for Extreme Scale Computing (JLESC).
  • potential to develop your personal strengths, e.g. by comprehensive training in the field of high-performance computing
  • options for flexible working hours, support with childcare, and solutions suited to your individual situation
  • salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD)

Forschungszentrum Jülich aims to employ more women in science and therefore particularly welcomes applications from women. We also welcome applications from disabled persons.
