Fourth Augustin Hirschvogel Fellowship at the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies in Regensburg (2019)

In 2019, the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) for the fourth time awards the Augustin Hirschvogel Fellowship.

IOS encourages applications from historians, geographers, cartographers and scholars of cognate disciplines, who focus on Eastern or Southeastern Europe. The duration of the research stay is up to four weeks.

As part of a mutual agreement with the institute, the fellow is expected to contribute to the development of GeoPortOst by testing and exploiting it. GeoPortOst is the IOS gateway for historical and thematic maps, printed in books and/or published for the first time digitally in GIS format.

The allowance is determined by the length of stay and the applicant’s professional experience.

Augustin Hirschvogel (1503–1553) was a German cartographer, who produced maps of Southeastern Europe (Carniola, Croatia, Bosnia and Hungary) and Eastern Europe (maps for Rerum Moscoviticarum Commentarii by Sigismund von Herberstein). Moreover, the oldest map of the IOS library’s stock (from 1575) is a work by Hirschvogel.

The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS, http://www.leibniz‐ios.de ) in Regensburg is an independent research facility with close links to the University of Regensburg. It conducts interdisciplinary research in the historical, economic and political developments of Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Another significant feature is the institute’s distinctly international orientation. Furthermore, the IOS maintains a special library holding a stock of more than 340,000 media units of literature in humanities and social sciences relating to the countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Together with the University of Regensburg, the institute provides an attractive research environment in a city known for its high quality of life. Regensburg has one of Germany’s largest preserved medieval cities holding the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We now invite applications for our 2019 Augustin Hirschvogel Fellowship.

The application documents should include the following:
- a short research proposal in German or English (maximum three pages)
- a detailed academic Curriculum Vitae (naming two references in the case of junior researchers in a non‐tenured position)
- electronic copies of no more than three academic articles (published or unpublished), in PDF format
- preferences concerning length and desired period of your stay (Period between February and November).
