administrator
The research project “Demography and society in historical Southeastern Europe: a comparative analysis of variation between and within countries” is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and will last from Nov. 1st, 2021 to Oct. 31st, 2024. It is based at the Institute of History at the University of Graz, Austria. Historical demography about and in Southeastern Europe is still quite underdeveloped compared to the leading centres of such research situated mainly in Northwestern Europe. Historical overviews of this region often deal with historical demography very peripherally. There is no publication available yet which deals exclusively with the population development in Southeastern Europe during the last two centuries. Quantitative analyses of regional variations in historical demography within a country and between different occupational groups have been based mainly on the only existing representative database of rural and urban populations in Southeastern Europe: the Albanian population census of 1918. This project will open up the possibility to do similar research in other countries of this region and to compare them. Tasks: Collaboration in searching census manuscripts and in designing samples for data transcription Coding, checking, georeferencing, and documenting of historical census data Historical demographic data analysis Collaboration in preparing conference presentations and research papers Qualifications required: Master degree in history (or related discipline) Knowledge of at least one Southeast European language and English Skills in demographic or statistical methods Skills in the application of GIS methods Gross salary per month € 2,237.60 for 30 hours/week, the remaining time you are expected to write a PhD-thesis about historical demography. Applications with a CV and questions concerning this research position should be sent to Siegfried Gruber (si.gruber@uni-graz.at). Deadline for applications is Aug. 31st, 2021. __________________________________ Mag.
