Excellence in teaching and research and a commitment to interdisciplinary teaching are expected. The teaching duties will normally consist of one course (5 ECTS) each quarter as well as supervising BSc and MSc student research projects. The courses mainly concern calculus, linear algebra, statistics, numerical mathematics. Innovation of interdisciplinary mathematics education is an essential part of the tasks. This includes improving students’ conceptual and contextual understanding of mathematics as well as promoting student engagement and learning. We particularly welcome applications in the research areas Probability and Statistics, Systems Control & Optimization or Computational and Numerical Mathematics; applications in the areas Algebra or Dynamical Systems, Geometry & Mathematical Physics are also possible (see Organization for more details). Within the framework of these research areas, you can develop your own research line and/or contribute to existing research lines. Research activities include publishing in leading journals, (co-)supervising of PhD-students, maintaining and/or developing research collaborations and (co-)writing grant proposals.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) is the largest faculty within the University. We offer first-rate education and research in a wide range of science and engineering disciplines, from classical disciplines such as mathematics, astronomy and mechanical engineering, to interdisciplinary fields such as artificial intelligence, pharmacy and nanoscience [change fields if desirable]. At FSE, education and research are strongly intertwined, and we value a strong disciplinary basis for our students. Our programmes in science and engineering, while diverse, share a common view on best practices for research-driven, international education. We are proud of the open, inclusive, and informal character of our community.

	The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment, UC Davis conducts a reference check on all first choice candidates for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant's previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UC Davis requires all applicants for any open search for assistant professor to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into RECRUIT as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists considered for Academic Senate Assistant Professor or Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, Steps 4, 5, or 6, or Acting Professor of Law positions will be subject to reference checks.

	Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Environmental History of Socialism within the framework of ‘The Socialist Anthropocene in the Visual Arts’, a five-year interdisciplinary research project awarded in the ERC Consolidator Grant competition and funded through a UKRI Frontier Research grant.

	The Socialist Anthropocene in the Visual Arts (SAVA) sets out to radically transform current debates on the Anthropocene, addressing the major lacuna in existing accounts by establishing the Socialist Anthropocene as a novel conceptual framework that asserts the constitutive role of the twentieth century environmental histories of socialism in the formation of the new geological age. It is the first large-scale interdisciplinary research project that institutes the Socialist Anthropocene as a new field of study within the critical corpus concerned with challenging and decentring the West-centric discourses of the Anthropocene. The approach of the project is to reconstruct the histories of the Socialist Anthropocene through visual arts led interdisciplinary research, which entails analysing historical artworks and engaging with contemporary art practices that act as a catalyst to integrate the insights of multiple disciplines and as a critical agent to pose ambitious and expansive questions, challenging assumptions and engendering new cross-disciplinary paradigms to illuminate the specificities of the Socialist Anthropocene.

	About the role

	The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will carry out an individual research project into an aspect of the environmental history of socialism. They will also contribute to the reconstruction of the histories of the Socialist Anthropocene with a focus on the themes of extractivism, infrastructure and agriculture by engaging in an interdisciplinary dialogue with fellow members of the SAVA team. Based at the Postsocialist Art Centre in the Institute of Advanced Studies UCL, the successful candidate will contribute through their work on the environmental history of socialism to the research outcomes of the SAVA project.

	About you

	The Postdoctoral Fellow in the Environmental History of Socialism will have a research specialisation in Central and Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union or another global region of the socialist world. Projects based on case studies or comparative approaches to the environmental history of socialism during the great acceleration of the twentieth century are likely to be of particular relevance. The candidate will hold a PhD in Environmental History or a related discipline awarded within the last three years, although career breaks will also be taken into account. They will have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and other equivalent research outputs. They will be expected to demonstrate an openness to interdisciplinary and artistic methodologies, as well as skills in dissemination and communication of research and a willingness to participate fully in public facing events.

	What we offer

	As well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

In addition, you will supervise PhD students, collaborate with post-doctoral students, write research grants for potential acquisition of external research funds and are involved in developing and organizing events such as research conferences, workshops and seminars.

	Qualifications

 commitment towards teaching and student supervision;

 ability to teach in and develop teaching material for Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Mathematics;

	In view of our aspiration to improve the gender balance, we strongly encourage women to apply.
Willingness to acquire a working knowledge of the Dutch language within the first few years of the appointment is furthermore highly appreciated.

	Offer

	Assistant professor positions are tenure-track positions subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation. Following a positive evaluation the position will become permanent after 5 years. However, depending on qualifications, the tenure decision may be waived.
