The Department of Government and International Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is offering a PhD position (duration: 48 months) for Dr. C. K. Martin Chung’s project “Reconciliation and Its Resentments: The Suppression of Justice and Truth Recovery in Germany, Northern Ireland, and Western Balkans”.

The project critically examines and compares reconciliation initiatives in the three selected cases in Europe and the underlying causes for the rejection of political reconciliation.

It is funded by the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (GRF 12614422) for a four-year period (2023-2026).

The position is ideal for postgraduate students aiming for a PhD in Government and International Studies on a thesis topic related to Dr. Chung’s project. Of particular relevance are topics in Transitional Justice, Strategic Peacebuilding and Postconflict Reconciliation with a comparative dimension (possibly but not necessarily including a case in Asia such as Hong Kong).

The four-year position begins in Sept. 2023 at HKBU, with an initial basic annual stipend of HK$213,840 (approx. €27,000) to HK$325,200 (€41,000) if awarded the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. Knowledge of Serbo-Croatian will be an advantage.
