  1. Hailing from Pancevo, Serbia with the dreams of one day becoming a professional tennis player sophomore Emilija Kojcic found her fit playing in the double’s lineup for Marquette women’s tennis. For Kojcic, coming to Marquette as an international student was the easiest, but she said she found home on the team surrounded by other Serbian and international players. “There were a lot of Serbian girls on the team which I really liked and the fact that I could speak my language and feel more comfortable with people around. It really helped me a lot in choosing Marquette,” Kojcic said. Kojcic said as a kid she knew she wanted to take her tennis to the next level, she started to gain confidence over the years. Coming from a small town, where it was a struggle to pay for the costs of tennis and find opportunities to play at a high level, she said the Golden Eagles provided her with the chance to make her mark. “For me, the greatest thing I could have done for myself was to come and play tennis and also get an education,” Kojcic said. “Playing college tennis has helped me support my parents to stop dealing with the financial difficulties that come with playing tennis.” Kojcic said she first heard about Marquette through assistant coach Dusan Medan, who is also Serbian. Medan closely followed her youth career as well as serving as the main point of contact with her coaches in the recruitment process. “Talking to her coaches, I knew from a tennis standpoint what she was going to bring,” Medan said. Medan said Kojcic’s competitiveness has been crucial for the lineup and is something he looks for in a player. “The level of competitiveness and talent level is very high and that is what we are seeing so far this season,” Medan said. “She is a well-rounded player that has a lot of upside and experience at playing at a high level, which is very valuable.” Kojcic said her relationship with her doubles partner Natalija Popovic makes for a good outcome on the court every time. “She is there to back me up, support me always and it is very important that we are also really good friends so we can make an impression against teams,” Kojcic said. Popovic said Kojcic’s biggest strength outside of her competitiveness is her volley. “I like winning, and winning for my team, and also having Natalija as my support and sharing the court with her is something really special. I consider Natalija a great person and one of the greatest players I’ve ever played with,” Kojcic said. At first, being hesitant of playing doubles, Kojcic said she wasn’t sure if she had the capability and confidence for that big spot on the team. Now in her second year in doubles, Kojcic said she has gained more experience to take on that role. “Last year I wasn’t as comfortable and didn’t have much confidence in myself playing doubles but I just doubted if I was good enough for this, so I just wanted to keep working hard and improving myself. This year is different than last year because I have more experience playing with Natalija,” Kojcic said. Kojcic and Popovic both bring different strengths and qualities to the doubles court. “I think that our net game is pretty good as well as our serves, we always bring energy to the court as well as to the games that are playing next to us,” Popovic said. “Since we are both Serbian we can communicate without people understanding what we are saying.” Starting off the season 5-5, the main goal for Marquette’s number one doubles team has been focusing on each match individually and each day of practice to try to get better for the BIG EAST Tournament at the end of the season. “As a team we are way better right now than last year. Now with new girls on the team we are more together as a family and we are going to have way better results at the end of the year,” Kojcic said. In preparation for big games, Kojcic said she has been working on improving her returns at the back of the court and not being scared when the ball is being fired at her. “I want to work on my returns because I think returns are really important in starting the point so Natalija can also move at the net off of my return, and I would like my serve to be more consistent so I can also help my teammate over at the net,” Kojcic said. 7. BEYOND BORDERS supports research about borders and boundaries in past and present times. It promotes interdisciplinary exchange in the social sciences and humanities. The Call for Applications 2022 is open till 1 March 2022 and focuses on “Borders, Migration and Knowledge”. Borders are an integral part of our everyday life. Political, social, virtual, intellectual, and cultural borders are hotly contested, both in international contexts around issues of migration, security, trade, or global education and within nations trying to deal with increased diversity and changing notions of national culture and history. Geographical borders separate states, regions, and cities. They mark the breadth and depth of territorial organization while informal symbolic and social boundaries define values and norms for social, cultural, and religious life. All types of borders can be conceived as social constructs: They may refer to cultural and historical backgrounds, result from international treaties or political negotiations or reflect public debates on controversial topics. In our increasingly globalized world in which human mobility and the constant circulation of goods, objects, ideas and practices are also an integral part of everyday life, the importance of border making and crossing is growing. Borders and cross-border regions function therefore as manifestations of social, political, economic, and cultural change. Focus 2022: Borders, Migration and Knowledge The migration of people is intimately connected to the migration of knowledge and culture. However, strong international borders still define what is considered national literature, art, or history and which artists, writers, and thinkers from which parts of the world gain global recognition. We invite project applications that explore how national and international canons are produced and changed. Under what conditions do knowledge and culture circulate easily, and when are they blocked? What powers and interests are served when canons are defined? How do museums, universities, archives, and libraries change when traditional intellectual and cultural power centers are displaced or decentered? Questions concerning borders, migration, knowledge production and circulation as well as social and cultural transfers across nations are the focus of the current call for applications for Ph.D. scholarships. We encourage applications for projects concentrating on following aspects, although other topics will also be considered: - trajectories of migration and mobility of cultural and intellectual production, - social and cultural dimensions of borders, - cultural borders and their manifestation in arts and cultural production, - circulation of ideas and knowledge, - the changing understanding of the “national”, - transnational and global cultural institutions and canons, - decolonizing decoloniality – what is a decentered approach to producing, disseminating, teaching about and acting upon knowledge in more equitable ways. We invite applications from Ph.D. students worldwide studying borders and bordering phenomena in different regions of the world. Both empirical research based on extensive fieldwork and projects centered on theoretical reflection are eligible for support. Innovative and challenging research questions as well as comparative approaches are highly welcome. https://beyondborders.zeit-stiftung.de/ Please contact Rotyslava Babinets babinets@zeit-stiftung.de if you have any questions.

  9. The Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) of the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade announces an open competition for organizations to submit applications for the BOLD Academic Fellowship Program. The BOLD (Balkanski omladinski lideri, Young Balkan Leaders in English) network is a project of PDS that seeks to develop the leadership capacity of young Serbians by empowering them to implement projects for positive change in their communities in two thematic areas: civic engagement and economic development. Anyone age 18-35 in Serbia can join the BOLD network where members have access to three main types of competitive opportunities: BOLD Academic Fellowships: Two in-depth leadership training experiences in the United States for 5-6 weeks, one on each BOLD theme. BOLD Workshops: Two workshops, one week to 10 days long, on leadership and project management, each on one of the BOLD themes. BOLD Small Grant Competition: An annual competition, open to all BOLD members, for funds up to $15,000 to implement projects in the areas of the BOLD themes over the course of a year. Program Objectives: The BOLD Academic Fellowship Program consists of two fellowships to take place in the United States for 5-6 weeks each, one on the theme of civic engagement and one on the theme of economic development. Applicants may propose implementation of either one of the fellowships, OR implementation of two fellowships. If the proposal is for one fellowship, please indicate in box “c” of the application form if the theme will be civic engagement or economic development. Each fellowship should be both academic and practical in nature, approximately 5-6 weeks in length, and ideally include a residency at a U.S. academic institution with a significant component of experiential learning, including community service, in the community or in another location. Ideally, each institute should also incorporate a homestay experience as part of the program. The primary outcome desired by PDS is for fellows, either individually or in groups, upon their return to Serbia, to design a civic or economic project to be implemented in their communities over the course of the year. By the end of the fellowship, they should have a complete draft of a project proposal or business plan, which will be competitive for funding from the Embassy or other donors. The academic component in the United States should include group discussions, experiential learning activities, and exercises that focus on the best practices, leading research, and most influential ideas and models pertaining to the theme of the fellowship. The experiential learning component should include substantive and participatory community activities related to the theme of the fellowship. Where possible, a particular focus on the impact of not-for-profit organizations and/or social enterprises should be integrated into the program. Both components of each fellowship should teach leadership skills and provide the necessary knowledge and experience for students to implement their follow-on projects in Serbia, including, but not limited to teambuilding, collective problem-solving, effective communication, appreciation of diversity, and management skills. In accordance with the Executive Order on Advancing Racial Equity and Underserved Communities, proposals should demonstrate how the program advances equity with respect to race, ethnicity, religion, income, geography, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability. The proposal should also demonstrate how the program will further engagement in underserved communities and with individuals from underserved communities. Proposals should demonstrate how addressing racial equity and underserved communities will enhance the program’s goals and objectives, as well as the experience of participants. In light of social distancing measures, and to limit the spread of COVID-19, we welcome proposals that utilize video conferencing, distance learning tools, etc. If your proposal includes in-person activities, please consider the inclusion of contingency plans, just in case the health situation requires that social distancing measures be implemented during the grant period. How might you switch your project from an in-person to a virtual format? If you are successful in securing PDS funding to launch your project, you will be expected to publicize your activities, including through social media and/or traditional press outlets; and highlight U.S. Embassy support for your activity, with our logo included on project-related materials. Program Themes: CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. This fellowship should introduce participants to the concept of civic engagement in the United States as a means of improving communities and the institutions and services of government and provide them with the skills to implement projects as civic leaders themselves. An understanding of civic engagement and the civil society sector and its development in the United States should be accompanied by the opportunity to apply the U.S. experience to the Serbian context. The academic program should define civic engagement, examine its development in the United States, and explore topics such as citizenship in democracy, community building, economic development, grassroots activism, political leadership, and volunteerism in the modern age.Proposals should demonstrate an ability to provide content on a variety of sub-themes in which fellows may already have a specific interest or to which they may be directed as a project area. Some sub-themes may include, but are not limited to civil rights and protections, public health, education, environmental conservation, ethics, leadership, or free media. Academic sessions should be complemented with a community-based experiential learning component that serves two purposes. Hands-on sessions or workshops designed to build skills in the topics mentioned above should assist participants in developing innovative and practical plans for projects they will implement upon their return to Serbia. In addition, to promote the idea of leadership rooted in community service, participants should also be required to engage in service learning. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. This fellowship should provide participants with an overview of entrepreneurial approaches by introducing challenges and successes of U.S. entrepreneurial models, including social enterprises, the leadership role of businesses in democratic societies, and women’s economic empowerment. An understanding of the U.S. entrepreneurial ecosystem should be accompanied by a strong focus on how to apply lessons learned in the Serbian context. Topics may include, but are not limited to, organizational development and management, the basics of starting and running a small business, market research and risk analysis, innovation, strategic business planning, and corporate social responsibility. Academic sessions should be complemented with a community-based experiential learning component that serves two purposes: to build skills and expose participants to the American entrepreneurial ecosystem. Hands-on sessions or workshops designed to build skills in the topics mentioned above should assist participants in developing entrepreneurial ideas in the form of a business plan and a pitch, and a concrete action plan to implement toward starting a business. In addition, to promote the idea of leadership rooted in community service, participants should also be required to engage in service learning. Participants and Audiences: Participants or primary audiences for BOLD Academic Fellowships should be Serbian undergraduate students, age 18-25, from across Serbia. Each fellowship should consist of at least 10 participants traveling to the United States. Information Session PDS will hold a virtual information session on February 23, 2022, at 16:00 (4 pm) CET to discuss this funding opportunity and to answer questions from potential applicants. Please contact PDS at BOLDSerbia@state.gov for details. https://rs.usembassy.gov/bold-academic-fellowships-program-2022/

The ideal candidate is a person holding an MA in either history or political science, preferably with a demonstrable knowledge in the history or politics of modern East Central Europe. An affinity to the analysis of literary texts is an advantage, as well as an interest (and preferably experience) in analysing utopian and other political texts. The knowledge of English and an East Central European language (other than Hungarian) is a necessity, Latin is an advantage., The ideal candidate has knowledge and interest in the 19-20th century history of political thought or political ideologies in Europe, preferably in East Central Europe. The PhD research proposal will need to correspond to the current project. The appointee will hold the position of a doctoral student, and will join an interdisciplinary research team that investigates 19th and 20th century East Central European utopian literature. RESEARCH FIELD AND RESEARCH QUESTIONS The project aims at the analysis of 19th and 20th century East Central European utopian texts, focusing on the problems and conflicts utopianism highlights concerning the ideals of democracy. We shall contrast such ideals with historical movements to trace the intellectual history of democracy within utopianism. Political concepts originating in Western Europe often become adapted and reinterpreted in Central Europe, this is why most Central European texts, unlike the ones produced in Western Europe, treat democracy as a utopian concept, something to be achieved. The research focus is not on individual texts or their authors, but how the texts reflect the historical context and conflicts concerning ideas of good government in East Central Europe. Further, how these conflicts reflect attitudes towards democracy in the region, particularly in comparison and contrast to Western Europe, will be central to the study. Based on Sargent (1994) the project considers utopias as ideas of a better society, not necessarily perfect, but intended to be ideal, at least significantly better than the current society of the author. Although the investigation focuses on texts and their relationship to historical and political movements and conflicts, all three faces of utopianism will be reflected, that is, literary texts, the utopian elements of political ideologies and to some extent intentional communities as well. Dystopias will also be considered as parts of the utopian discourse. There are great variations in the definition of Central Europe, the research will consider it not only as physical space but also a virtual (quasi-utopian) area marked by an awareness of and a longing for “democracy,” as a liminal territory in between East and West, showing signs of both Eastern and Western patterns of power relationship, a hybrid between democracy and dictatorship. It is assumed that the investigation of Central European texts and attitudes sheds light not only on the political thought of Central Europe, but also on the ideas concerning democracy both in Western and Eastern European political thought. WORKING CONTEXT, KEY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES The Researcher will be a doctoral student of the Central European University in the department of History (or Political Science), and will be co-supervised and managed by the lead scholar, Dr. Zsolt Czigányik. The post-holder will receive guidance and support from members of the research team. The Doctoral Researcher will be expected to: • Effect research in full compliance of ethics, data and best-practice research guidelines valid at Central European University and the Gerda Henkel Foundation, and will be supported to do so • Fulfil the degree requirements of a PhD in Comparative History or Political Science at CEU, including coursework and exams in the first year of the program and the completion of the doctoral dissertation by the end of the project. • Collaborate effectively within the research group • Develop and deliver high-quality, innovative research outcomes on the subject of the research described above, including, but not limited to, the following activities: o As part of your research process, to participate in and convene workshops, seminars, conferences, training sessions and other collaborative events with a range of participants o Participation in the organisation of workshops of the research team o Produce research publications for leading international and/or peer reviewed journals o Produce book chapters for project-specific publications, including edited volumes o Participate in conferences of appropriate learned societies and associations o Produce research dissemination materials (blog, podcast, etc.) for the project’s public facing website and social media, as well as other channels o Perform editorial and critique tasks as appropriate to support other team members and the publications of the research team o Work with the lead scholar to ensure that he has the information and materials he needs to effect the smooth running of project o Other tasks as agreed with the lead scholar • Work closely with the other members of the research team to assist in research and outcome delivery • Travel, including international travel, where necessary and appropriate KEY DIMENSIONS AND CHALLENGES The post-holder will be working in an international, interdisciplinary context in which a range of disparate methodologies will be operative concurrently. It will be important that the literary, historical and political aspects of the texts and other research material or phenomena be taken into consideration simultaneously. It will be essential for the post-holder to maintain dignity, respect, intellectual rigour in all research activities and dealings with the various actors s/he will engage with and encounter in the project.

Uppsala University welcomes applications for doctoral student positions in sociology based at the Department of Sociology. The Department seeks to appoint up to four candidates with excellent academic merits who can demonstrate their potential for research in any area of sociology. One further candidate will be appointed with an emphasis on housing and/or urban research and will be employed by the Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF) (www.ibf.uu.se). This candidate will follow the doctoral program of the Department of Sociology and will conduct his or her doctoral research in collaboration with supervisors at both the IBF and the Department of Sociology. Applicants interested in the doctoral position at the IBF must explicitly indicate it. In addition to the dissertation work, the doctoral education program includes also both obligatory and elective courses. For further information on the PhD program see: https://www.soc.uu.se/education/doctoral-program/doctoral-studies/ The Department of Sociology offers opportunities for developing research as part of the established research groups: https://www.soc.uu.se/research/research-groups/ Requirements: To be admitted to the Ph.D. program basic as well as specific qualifications are required. To meet the basic qualifications applicants must have a degree at an advanced level, or to demonstrate some equivalent and equal form of knowledge. The specific qualification requires an applicant to have at least 90 credits in sociology or equivalent in order to be considered eligible (or to demonstrate equivalent and equal knowledge). The position of doctoral candidate is demanding in scholarly terms and the Department of Sociology wishes to appoint candidates who can thrive in and contribute to the Department’s research environment. The terms and conditions of employment for doctoral researchers at Department of Sociology are internationally highly competitive in order to secure the appointment of candidates with excellent academic merits. To be accepted, the applicant must be deemed to have the capacity to finish the doctoral program. An evaluation of the applicant’s capacity to successfully finish the program is of crucial importance for the admission. The evaluation is primarily based on the academic record as documented in the texts and the research plan submitted by the applicant. Personal qualities that are desirable in a doctoral candidate include good communication and time management skills, flexibility and ability to work in harmony with co-workers. An excellent command of written and spoken English are requirements for all the PhD positions. The availability of suitable supervision within the applicant’s research area will also be considered in the admission. The application must include: Application form http://uadm.uu.se/digitalAssets/81/81624_ansokan_forskarniva_eng.pdf An attested copy of relevant degree(s); Research plan (see below); Copies of texts that illustrate the candidate’s scholarly abilities (theses, articles etc.); A covering letter that explains the candidate’s motivation for the application; The names of two referees who we can approach regarding the candidate’s academic and personal abilities. Research plan: A short research plan of about 2000 words (excluding references) describing the sociological topic of the proposed doctoral thesis should be included in the application. The plan should briefly review previous research, formulate a research problem and aim, and present the potential theoretical perspectives and methodological approach to be adopted. The applicants will be ranked based on the quality of the research plan and the materials that they submit with their applications. The research plan is used not only to test applicants’ capacity to structure a research project (in relation to sociological theory and existing research as well as decide on appropriate methods to answer the research questions that the plan poses), but also to get an idea of the applicant’s research interest. For more information about the research plan, see the document: https://soc.uu.se/digitalAssets/499/c_499166-l_1-k_appendix-2b-research-proposal-guidelines.pdf Individual interviews with the highest ranked applicants may be used as well. Therefore, the candidates should be available for interview, either in person or via Skype, on Wednesday March 30th 2022. Employment Conditions: Successful candidates will be awarded employment as doctoral candidates for a full period of four years. The employment starts 2022-09-01 or as otherwise agreed, and is placed in Uppsala. The scope of the employment is 100% and salary will be paid according with the guidelines of Uppsala University. The employed doctoral students must primarily devote their time to their own dissertation research. Other departmental duties may also be included in the position, such as, teaching or administrative tasks, but at no more than 20%. 24. Men’s Recap: The Utah men started off the night strong, winning the 200 medley relay by almost two full seconds in 1:24.47, just two tenths short of the NCAA A cut needed to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The quartet included Andrei Ungur, Andrew Britton, Cooper Deryk and Finn O’Haimhirgin, the same four from Utah’s school record relay of 1:24.15 from last year’s NCAA meet, where they finished 15th. Fresh off his win in the 200 IM last night, Princeton junior Raunak Khosla dominated the 400 IM, winning in 3:45.55. The Roswell, Georgia native had a notably fast breaststroke leg, splitting 30.17 and 31.37 for a blistering 1:01.54. Khosla’s best time stands at 3:41.75 from the 2020 Ivy League Championships. George Washington sophomore Djurdje Matic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, won the 100 fly in 45.72, breaking GW’s program record by more than a full second. That time also easily clears the NCAA B cut and is faster than the invited time from the last three years, putting the sophomore in great position after the midseason meets. Utah’s Ben Waterman, a junior from Albuquerque, New Mexico, finished runner up in 46.48, just off his lifetime best of 46.23. Utah finished the session winning three straight first individual events. Their first win of the evening in the men’s 200 free, courtesy of freshman Marko Kovacic’s 1:35.61. One event later, his teammate, sophomore Jaek Horner, won the 100 breast in 53.04. Horner touched just ahead of Princeton junior Josh Brown, who settled for the runner up spot in 53.16. Utah’s final individual win came in the 100 back, where junior Andrei Ungur blasted a 46.06 to win by over a second. That time comes in under the NCAA invite time from last season. The Princeton men won the final race of the evening, the 800 free relay, in 6:24.82. The relay narrowly missed breaking Princeton’s program record of 6:24.75 from 2009. Also notably, Princeton’s Raunak Khosla set a new Tiger program record in the 100 breast in the prelims of 52.45, but scratched the final in favor of the 400 IM.
