Thank you for your interest in AUBG! As a citizen of Serbia & Montenegro, you have the unique chance to apply for a SOROS scholarship for AUBG. I have included more information on the SOROS scholarship and the benefits of applying to AUBG through SOROS below. As of this year, students should fill an online application or download and print the application from the AUBG website at www.aubg.bg

The SOROS scholarship is a 4-year /i.e. 8 semester/ grant that covers tuition, travel, visas and residence permits, and health insurance at AUBG. Students who win a SOROS scholarship are expected to cover the cost of food, residence hall, and books. The scholarship requires that the recepient maintain a cumulative grade point average /CGPA/ of minimum 3.00 /on a scale of 4.00/.

Students should fill in the "Application for AUBG Financial Assistance" and provide the supporting financial documents required, just as they would if they applied directly to AUBG. The scholarships are awarded based on merit and need. Typically, only one or two students from each eligible country receive a SOROS scholarship, but many more are admitted and receive substantial financial assistance from AUBG in the forms of grants, loans, and work-study.

Applying for a SOROS scholarship for AUBG may give you the opportunity to get a full scholarship even if you do not have an SAT close to the 1600 maximum /i.e. Critical Reading + Math or Verbal + Math/, as long as your results are the highest from the SOROS applicants from your country. To get a 100% tuition fee waiver, you would normally need an SAT close to the maximum of 1600 /i.e. Critical Reading + Math or Verbal + Math/. The SOROS scholarship may give you the opportunity to get that and more as long as you're the best from the people who applied for the SOROS scholarship from your country.

If you decide to apply for a SOROS scholarship to AUBG, please contact immediately the AUBG SOROS representative whose address is listed below. The deadline /last date on which you can apply/ is December 20, 2005 for paper applications, and January 1, 2006 for online applications; do not wait until the deadline. Please note that whether you are filling an online application or a paper one, all other documents must be taken or sent to the AUBG SOROS representative's office in your country by the deadline.

If you wish to apply through SOROS, please contact Elizabeth Chung at the International Academic Center - Belgrade. If you want to apply directly, you can send all documents directly to AUBG.

Financial aid documents received at AUBG Admissions office: by March 1, 2006

    Applications

Applications can be submitted on-line or downloaded. Applicants are encouraged to submit an on-line application. If on-line service is unavailable, applications should be downloaded and printed by the applicant. Any applications submitted after the deadline (December 20, 2005 for paper based, and January 1, 2006 for online applications) will not be reviewed for the Soros Scholarship but will be reviewed for regular AUBG admission.

Supporting documentation to be included with the on-line or paper based application. The essay can be attached with the online application:

? Official high school transcript with GPA

? Certified English translation of transcript

? Three letters of recommendation, with translation if not written in English

? Completed Financial aid documentation ? sent to AUBG Admissions office by March 1, 2006

? Students, who have taken the official TOEFL and SAT Reasoning Test, should be advised to require ETS to send their official scores to AUBG. The AUBG Institution code for receiving official scores is 2451.

    Financial Assistance

Any student interested in applying for a Soros Scholarship at AUBG should be encouraged to complete the Application for Financial Assistance, as the Soros Scholarship will be awarded based on merit and need. Typically, only one or two students from each country receive a Soros Scholarship, but many more are admitted and receive substantial Financial assistance from AUBG in the form of grants, loans, and work-study. Some of the students who are not selected as Soros Scholars may also be eligible for a merit scholarship, which is awarded by the Admissions Committee. Students who do not submit the application for Financial assistance and the supporting documentation along with their application for admission are not considered for any Financial aid.

    Testing

The AUBG Admissions office strongly recommends that all applicants take the official TOEFL and SAT Reasoning Tests offered in the country for admission purposes, and have their official test reports sent directly to the AUBG Admissions office by filling in the AUBG code for receiving official test scores ? 2451.

In cases when the applicants have not taken the tests already, or are not planning to take them by the end of January 2006, the Scholarship Coordinator will be responsible for administering the Institutional TOEFL (ITP) on January 21, 2006 and the Institutional SAT (MAPS - Multiple Assessment Programs) on February 25, 2006. Instructions will be provided both by ETS and College Board for proper administration of the tests.

The Institutional TOEFL and SAT tests are acceptable only at AUBG and not at other institutions. If an applicant has taken a regular TOEFL or SAT, official scores must be requested by the applicant to be sent directly to AUBG. The AUBG Institution code for receiving official scores is 2451.

    Final Selection

The selection of finalists for the Soros Scholarships takes place at AUBG in April by representatives of AUBG?s Admissions Committee.

Assessment of applicants is based on their academic records, on test scores, on ratings on the essay included in the application, on their general interests outside of academics, and on financial need. Previous study outside their home country does not increase the possibility of the candidates? receiving a Soros Scholarship. The decisions of the Admissions Committee are final.

  4. On Tuesday 15 November at 7.00 p.m., the Center will host a presentation for the American University Soros Scholarship program. The American University Soros Scholarship program is for the American University of Bulgaria, the only accredited American Liberal Arts University for undergraduates in Southeast Europe.

Representatives from the American University of Bulgaria will be at the Center to give a presentation and answer any questions that you have. It is a great way to get acquainted with the American university system first hand. Although many students opt to go directly to the USA for an American education, this is a good alternative for students who want an American education a bit closer to home. In addition, to being close and less expensive, it is also considered a prestigious diploma to hold because the university was set up in cooperation with USAID.

IAC staff would encourage you to come on Tuesday evening and learn more about this wonderful American university that is right here in our neighborhood. As always please reply to the e-mail or call our office to let us know to reserve a chair for you.

  17. Dear IAC student/clients,

The Center is preparing to open two new courses - one for high school students who wish to study at an American University and the other for students who wish to pursue graduate studies at an American University.

    For Undergraduate Students:

The Center is currently preparing to offer SAT preparation courses for the January 28 testing date. The courses will last 12 weeks and focus primarily on critical reading and essay writing, along with assistance for the Math sections. We are trying to structure the course for high school students who attend school in shifts. If you, or anyone you know is interested in the course, please contact our center and provide us with information about your school schedule so that we can work to accommodate you. January will arrive sooner than you expect, plus we will have several holidays, so it important that we get these courses organized as soon as possible, so please try to let us know, in a timely fashion, if you are interested.

    For Graduate Students:

Beginning Saturday 22 October from 2 to 5, we are organizing a writing seminar for graduate students. This seminar, entitled "Write your Way into Graduate School" lasts 5 weeks and covers the main aspects of writing tasks expected of graduate students. Primarily you will learn how to write for:

    GMAT

    GRE

    Admissions Committees

In addition, the program includes vocabulary building to lay the ground work for GRE and GMAT preparation. The course is designed to assist graduate students in reaching the necessary academic level in English to perform well on GRE and GMAT exams as well as how to impress admissions committees for those coveted assistantships.

The terms of the seminar are 3 hours, each Saturday for 5 weeks at 8,000 dinars. If you or anyone you know are interested, please do not hesitate to contact us, so we can place your name on the list.

Also please do not forget that in order to better serve you, we need to receive information for your file. If you would like to send us university lists, a list of the subjects you have studied and the marks you received, or any other pertinent information that can assist us in helping you in finding a graduate school, please be sure to send that to us via e-mail, with the subject: FOR MY FILE. Be sure and include your first and last name so we can be sure to include this in the right file.

    Best regards,

    The IAC Staff
