Potom ce vam se otvoriti izbor izmedju paper based, computer based i internet based testa.

  5. Third Annual Graduate Student Conference:

IDEA EXCHANGE: Mediums and Methods of Communication in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia

Graduate Organization for the Study of Europe and Central Asia

Center for Russian and East European Studies

    gosecaconference@yahoo.com

University of Pittsburgh, February 24-26, 2006

In the histories of Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, countless social and political upheavals have been articulated through, if not facilitated by, a variety of communication mediums and methods. The uses of various modes of communication played a critical role in the collapse of state socialism and in the later reconstruction of new political and social regimes. In the sixteen years since, the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of knowledge through practices of communication continue to be of vital importance to political engagement, cultural expression, arts, sciences, and the creation of novel social orders.

This conference will explore questions related to the historical and contemporary impact of different mediums and methods of communication in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia. We find it useful to adopt an inclusive understanding of mediums and methods that refers equally to venues for idea exchange, channels for the transmission of information, means through which communication is generated and even arenas for public debates and the constitution of civic initiatives.

We invite abstracts that address questions and arguments such as: What is the relationship between various mediums of communication and the reorganization of power, politics and the state in former socialist societies? How are they impacted by state regulations, economic factors, or the international promotion of intellectual property rights? Have mediums of communication been to used stimulate democratic participation and debate of ideas? Do they rather facilitate the exercise of novel forms of governance and tactics of power? What factors limit communication, and what elements of communication and media create new opportunities in the region? Who controls information, and who can authoritatively spread ideas?

The University of Pittsburgh?s Graduate Organization for the Study of Europe and Central Asia, in cooperation with the Center for Russian and East European Studies, invites fellow graduate students working on related topics from all disciplines to submit abstracts for our Third Annual Graduate Student Conference. We encourage a broad range of approaches, from social science and humanities to law and public policy, as well as a diverse set of topics to be explored in accordance with the main goal of this conference: to stimulate interdisciplinary debates and the exchange of ideas.

Deadline for submission of abstracts: DECEMBER 15, 2005

    Abstract Requirements

Paper abstracts of up to 500 words (using Microsoft Word or PDF format, 12 point font, double spaced) and curriculum vitae must be submitted via email to gosecaconference@yahoo.com by December 15, 2005. The body of the abstract should contain no identifying information other than its title.

The cover page must include: title of submission, author's or authors' name(s), institutional and departmental affiliation(s), e-mail address(es), geographic address(es), and a primary phone number. Although we require all of this information, correspondence will occur mainly via e-mail.

We will contact the author(s) of accepted abstracts by January 1, 2006.

    Paper Requirements

In order to facilitate presentation time limits, and to ensure time for active discussions, paper length will be limited to 8 typed pages, double-spaced, with 12 point font. All participants will be required to submit a copy of the final paper one month prior to the conference.

    Housing

The conference organization will be able to offer free housing, but not transportation, to all selected participants.

    Goldstine Fellowship

2006-2007 IBM Herman Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences

The Mathematical Sciences Department of the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center invites applications for its 2006-2007 Herman Goldstine Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship for research in mathematical and computer sciences. The fellowship provides scientists of outstanding ability an opportunity to advance their scholarship as resident department members at the Research Center. The Research Center is located in Westchester County, less than an hour north of New York City.

The Mathematical Sciences Department provides an atmosphere in which basic research is combined with work on technical problems arising in industry. Currently, about 100 permanent members, academic visitors, and post-doctoral fellows are pursuing research in pure and applied mathematics and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Areas of research include: algorithms (approximation, randomized, and on-line); coding theory; cryptography; data mining (machine learning, pattern recognition, and computational statistics); dynamical systems and differential equations; high-performance computation (including scientific computing and parallel computing); numerical analysis; optimization (discrete, continuous, and stochastic); probability theory (stochastic models, risk management, queues and queueing networks); statistics (time-series, multivariate analysis, design, and reliability); and supply-chain and operations management (pricing, optimization and performance modeling).

Close interaction with permanent department members is expected, but fellows are free to pursue their own research interests.

One fellowship will be awarded. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. degree after September 2001 or should expect to receive one before the fellowship commences in the second half of 2006. The fellowship has a period of one year, and may be extended another year by mutual agreement. The stipend is expected to be between $95,000 and $115,000, depending on the area and length of experience. An additional allowance for moving expenses will be provided.

Applications will be accepted between October 1, 2005 and December 31, 2005 via e-mail only. For proper and timely handling of your application, it is essential that you carefully follow the submission instructions below.

The complete application must be sent as a single e-mail to goldpost@watson.ibm.com. The subject field of the application must contain the string "2006 GOLDSTINE APPLICATION". The e-mail must have the following files attached (please follow the file names and types as listed below). A cover letter is not required.

Complete and attach the applicant profile (goldform.txt).

    Attach your full CV (cv.pdf / cv.ps / cv.doc).

    Attach the abstract of your Ph.D. dissertation (abstract.pdf / abstract.ps / abstract.doc).

Prepare and attach a 2-3 page research statement describing your current research and the research plan that you would like to pursue if offered the fellowship (research.pdf / research.ps / research.doc).

Finally, you may attach up to three of your most important papers (paper-1.pdf/ps/doc, paper-2.ps/pdf/doc, paper-3.pdf/ps/doc).

Applicants are also responsible for arranging for three or more letters of recommendation, including one from the thesis advisor. The letters must be e-mailed to goldpost@watson.ibm.com, must have "Recommendation letter for <first name> <last name>" in the subject field, and must arrive before December 31, 2005. A few selected applicants will later be asked to arrange for official transcripts listing graduate-level courses and grades received.

IBM is committed to work-place diversity, and is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer.

Any queries may be directed to goldpost@watson.ibm.com with the string "GOLDSTINE QUERY" in the subject field.

Deadline: For fairness, and due to the fact that we start the evaluation process immediately after the deadline, the deadline is strictly enforced.

Attachments: We strongly prefer all documents in PDF or PostScript formats, but Word documents will be accepted if you absolutely cannot generate them in PDF or PostScript. If your mailer would not allow all attachments in a single message, you may create a compressed Unix tar file (preferable) or a Windows zip file (acceptable) and attach that. While creating PostScript and/or PDF documents, please try to use fonts that facilitate on-screen reading. For example, including usepackage{times} in your LaTeX document greatly improves the on-screen readability of the resulting PostScript or PDF document.

A cover letter is not required. You may use the "Additional information" area on the applicant profile to convey anything that has not been covered in the remainder of the application.

Research statement: This is typically a 2-3 page summary of your recent research, and further investigations that you are considering in the near future. The statement is very much an individual matter, and you may wish to consult with your advisor.

Response from IBM: We will contact you by e-mail to acknowledge your application, and later, to inform you of our decision. All applicants will eventually receive at least two responses.

Transcripts: U.S. universities typically issue an official transcript listing courses you took and the grades received. If your university does not issue such a transcript, please mention this in a letter and send it along with the closest equivalent you can provide without undue effort. There is no need to send the transcripts unless you are asked to do so.

  13. The Central European University

    Nationalism Studies Program announces a

Call for applications for MA, PhD and DSP studies at the Central European University in Budapest

    About Nationalism Studies Program

The Nationalism Studies Program was established at Central European University by the late Ernst Gellner with the goal of promoting the study of nationalism in the post-communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The aim of the program is to engage students in an empirical and theoretical study of issues of nationalism, self-determination, problems of state-formation, ethnic conflict, minority protection and the related theme of globalization. Drawing upon the uniquely supranational milieu of Central European University, it encourages a critical and non-sectarian study of nationalism.

Students are encouraged to engage in an interdisciplinary study of nationalism, a subject that is inherently and fundamentally interdisciplinary. For this reason, the international teaching staff has been assembled to represent a wide range of disciplinary expertise relevant to the study of nationalism including history, social theory, economics, legal studies, sociology, anthropology, international relations and political science. The program offers a wide selection of courses that provide a complex theoretical grounding in problems associated with nationhood and nationalism combined with advanced training in the methodology of applied social science. Additional courses focus on placing problems of nationalism in the context of economic and political transition as well as constitution building in post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe with a comparative outlook on regime transitions outside the region.

    Faculty

The faculty of the Nationalism Studies Program includes M?ria M. Kov?cs, Andr?s Kov?cs, Will Kymlicka, Shlomo Avineri, Rogers Brubaker, Donald Horowitz, Michael Stewart, Erica Benner, Walter Kemp, Selim Deringil, Rainer Baub?ck, Tibor V?rady, Victor Kar?dy, Michael Miller, Zolt?n Mikl?si, J?lia Szalai and Florian Bieber.

With questions regarding the program or the admission process please turn to Szabolcs Pogonyi, the program coordinator (pogonyi@ceu.hu).
