The overarching goals of the SCI Institute's scientific computing research are to create new techniques, tools, and systems, by which scientists may solve problems affecting various aspects of human life. We believe that to advance the state-of-the-art and create meaningful computational solutions for such complex systems, one needs to advance research in a number of areas within scientific computing, including: visualization, simulation, and modeling. Furthermore, to enable such new algorithmic and software research to have real impact outside of scientific computing and computer science, these components must be integrated with data and application specific knowledge within intuitive software systems, problem solving environments (PSEs) or "computational workbenches." The SCI Institute presents a highly demanding work environment that can be deeply rewarding for the right individual.

The University of Utah, an AA/EO employer, encourages applications from women and minorities, and provides reasonable accommodation to the known disabilities of applicants and employees.

  7. Northwestern University will offer need-based financial aid awards to a small group of international students entering in Fall 2006. Citizens of countries outside the United States who apply under Regular Decision for financial aid will be reviewed as a separate group. The usual selective admission criteria, as well as the amount of financial aid needed by an applicant, will be factors in the admission committee's decision. As a result, Northwestern will not offer admission to some candidates who are otherwise well-qualified. For these reasons, the admission rate for international applicants requesting aid is substantially lower than for those not requesting aid. Only those students who apply for and receive financial aid for their freshman year will be eligible to receive financial assistance in subsequent years. There is no financial aid available for international transfer applicants or international students applying under Early Decision. Everything you need to know about applying to NU as an international student can be found at: http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/intl/. Specific information about our new aid policy is at: http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/intl/financing/. Last year we accepted and gave aid packages to 24 of the 320 students who applied. 10 of them are enrolling.

  9. Third International Linguistic Symposium LENCA, June 2006, Russia

Full Title: The Grammar and Pragmatics of Complex Sentences in Languages spoken in Europe and North and Central Asia (LENCA-3).

    Date: 27 June 2006 - 30 June 2006

    Location: Tomsk, Russia

Contact Persons: Elizaveta Kotorova, Andrey Filchenko, Pirkko Suihkonen Meeting Email: tomsk@eva.mpg.de

Conference Web Site (Eng, Rus): http://www.lenca3.siblang.org

    Mirror Site (Eng. only): http://www.ling.helsinki.fi/uhlcs/LENCA/LE...-3/lenca-3.html

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Pragmatics; Syntax; Semantics, Complex Sentence.

    Call Deadline: 15 December 2005

Meeting Description: The organizing committee of the third international symposium on the languages spoken in Europe and North and Central Asia (LENCA) to be held at Tomsk State Pedagogical University, Tomsk, Russia, on June 27-30, 2006, announces the CALL FOR PAPERS for LENCA-3.

Europe and North and Central Asia form a large natural geographical area for distribution of languages spoken in the area, and for diffusion of peoples and cultures. This area is the geographical basis for the LENCA-project which forms a framework for research of these languages and collecting information on these languages.

The LENCA-1 symposium on the languages belonging to the LENCA-group was at the Udmurt State University, Izevsk, Udmurtia, Russia in 2001. The topic of the first symposium was "Deixis and quantification" in languages spoken in Europe and North and Central Asia. The LENCA-2 symposium took place at the Kazan State University in 2004, with the theme "Argument structure and grammatical relations".

The theme of the LENCA-3 symposium centers on structural and semantic features of complex sentences: different strategies of subordination and coordination employed by languages, their geographic distribution and historical development, discourse-pragmatic features of their usage as a means of ensuring inter-clausal coherence, i.e. the semantic-pragmatic connectivity of the functional dimension of event integration vis-a-vis the syntactic dependency (grammatical bonds) of clause integration.

It is anticipated that a number of presentations will deal with these various aspects of complex sentences from a Siberian areal perspective. That is, the conference aims to encourage the development of a local typological view of complex sentences in languages native to Western and Central Siberia (such as Khanty, Selkup, Nenets, Evenki, Ket, Siberian Turkic, etc.), as well as possible contact influence from Russian. The scale, depth, terminology, and methodology of existing descriptions in this area vary considerably, and with this in mind one of the objectives envisioned for the symposium is to facilitate a negotiation of theoretical frameworks, methodologies, terminologies, and data as a prerequisite for further advancing of the topic. To this end, both a general typological and a historical perspective as a means to inform this discourse will be welcomed.

    Plenary Speakers (Confirmed):

  13. Intellectuals and the Nation-State

    30 November v 1st December 2005

    Plenary speakers include:

    Declan Kiberd (University College Dublin)

    Eric Lott (University of Virginia)

Slavoj Zizek (Institute for Sociology, Ljubljana/Birkbeck College, University of London).

What role and effect do intellectuals have in the making and contesting of national identities and state policies? This conference will consider historical and current implications of this question. The critical voice of the intellectual has long been considered important to the evolution of modern Western cultures. How and why was this voice so often tied to the development of national identity? How have ideals of intellectual autonomy and dissent been formulated within and across nation-states? What forms of intellectual production have states acknowledged and supported? What remains of the Enlightenment origins of the idea of the intellectual?

We will focus on current issues of intellectual identity and activity in the context of global challenges to the power and authority of the nation-state. Today, as new global networks of cultural interaction emerge and new public spheres take shape, what is happening to the intellectual's affective relation to the nation-state? What is the role of critical thinking and the value of ideas in an increasingly global 'knowledge society'? What is the role of intellectuals in the making of a new world order and in shaping responses to international crises? What is the role of think tanks and advocacy intellectuals in the formation of state policy? How have new media redefined intellectual activity and identity?

Please send one-page proposals with a brief CV by 31 August 2005 to:

Catherine Carey, Clinton Institute for American Studies, C211 John Henry Newman Building, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland.

For this position, we seek scholars working in transnational gender studies. We are particularly interested in candidates whose transnational research focuses on the construction of sexualities and genders in their global iterations.

The Department invites applications from interdisciplinary feminist scholars who are actively addressing core questions of gender and sexuality through ambitious research agendas and energetic teaching/mentoring on the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Applicants will be expected to assist in the development of the doctorate, teach core Gender Studies courses, and work collectively to develop the Department. Candidates must have prior teaching experience, preferably in Women's or Gender Studies and must have their PhD by August 2006.

The Department is in an extraordinary period of growth and we are now poised to inaugurate the first doctorate in Gender Studies in the nation. We anticipate admitting the first cohort of doctoral candidates in the fall of 2006. The Department currently offers a Bachelor of Arts, an undergraduate minor, and a PhD minor in Gender Studies. At present, our faculty includes seven full-time (100%) positions, and eight jointly-appointed lines. Over twenty-five additional faculty at Indiana University are affiliated with the Department and we work closely with other units on campus, most notably the Kinsey Institute for Research on Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. We seek to complement our departmental strengths in the study of sexualities; bodies and their technologization and medicalization; representation and cultural production; and feminist epistemologies.

Indiana University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer and is committed to employing faculty who will enhance the rich diversity of our academic community.
