  13. Catch the ball on the block. Head fake toward the baseline. Spin back to the middle of the lane. Right-handed jump hook. Swish. Repeat. It looks so effortless for Illinois State men’s basketball player Dusan Mahorcic, a 6-foot-10 forward who grew up in Serbia. He’s athletic for a player his size, running the floor like a guard while being quick and strong enough to score against stronger players down low. His journey to being one of the most efficient scorers so far this college basketball season—third in Division I with a 78.3 percent shooting percentage as of December 22—has been anything but. Mahorcic left the life he knew growing up and came to the United States just four years ago. Back in Serbia, he was raised in a single-parent household by a mother he adores. He’s encountered many hurdles along the way. But that all helped shape his drive in becoming a Division I basketball player, a dream he is fulfilling at Illinois State. “If I had a chance to do everything over, I would do it all the same,” Mahorcic said. Mahorcic has a basketball pedigree, and he learned much about the game from his superhero. His mother, Jelena, played professionally in Europe before a heart issue cut her career short. She was a 6-foot-4 center, and Mahorcic said that “nobody had moves like her.” After her playing days, Jelena worked several jobs to provide, showing Mahorcic early on how important it is to have a strong work ethic. “She’s more than just a woman,” Mahorcic said. “She is like a woman lion.” In fact, she was at the forefront of his mind when he turned down an option to play professionally in Europe at age 16 and moved to the United States to pursue an education. His mother would support Mahorcic with what he decided, but she encouraged him to chase his basketball dreams while pursuing an education. The United States was an avenue that could provide both. “One of the main reasons I came here was to show how much I appreciated her,” he said, noting that he still checks in every day with her. When he came to the U.S., he landed in the Chicagoland area and enrolled at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles. While he envisioned a Division I scholarship opportunity, life in a different country had its challenges. He dominated on the court, becoming one of the top high school players in Illinois by averaging 17.5 points per game as a senior. His unique skillset—a big who could run the floor and shoot—was attractive to college programs across the country. But learning another language while tackling high school courses made school difficult, and his grade-point average was just short of being able eligible to a Division I program. “I was really trying, but it was so hard,” Mahorcic said. He played at Division II Lewis College his freshman year but was hobbled with a foot injury. He transferred to Moberly Area Community College in Missouri for the 2019-20 season, where he scored in double figures 16 times. Some of his credits from Lewis College didn’t transfer over, and many schools did not come after him because he wouldn’t be immediately eligible. Illinois State coach Dan Muller and his staff took a chance on him, and Mahorcic made sure to reward them. He took nine credits this past summer, and he’s now a force on the Redbirds roster. “Illinois State was willing to take a risk and let me take those summer classes,” Mahorcic said. During the fall semester, Mahorcic had a 3.2 GPA, a number he’s especially proud of given where he was four years ago when he first arrived from Serbia. On the court, his silky-smooth game has been a lift for the Redbirds. He’s averaging 13.3 points per game in three contests. He is also the team’s leading rebounder at 8.7 per outing. Mahorcic had to wait a few extra years to fulfill his Division I basketball ambitions, overcoming many obstacles. But when he took the court for the first time on December 5 at Murray State, he couldn’t help but revel in the moment. “I was waiting for that (moment) for so long, and it was an explosion of emotions,” he said. “It was awesome to be a part of something bigger than yourself. It was an awesome experience with my coaches and teammates.” Now, he’s become a leader on the roster and embraces being one of the oldest players on the team despite it being his first year in the program. He has preached to his teammates about doing the little things right—strong sleep, nutrition, body care, etc.—in order to produce on the court. “It’s about the sacrifices we have to make now to go through the barriers in front of us,” Mahorcic said. “We need to get over them and get to the promised land.” Mahorcic knows a thing or two about getting over barriers, and he’s excited to bring his Redbird teammates along on this journey. https://news.illinoisstate.edu/2020/12/all-part-of-the-journey-serbian-native-mahorcic-finds-a-home-with-redbird-mens-basketball-team/

  23. The University of Maine men’s basketball program has added wing Novak Perovic as the first announced member of its 2020-2021 recruiting class. The 6-foot-8, 184-pound Perovic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, spent last season at the Hoosac School in Hoosick, New York. The Hoosac School competes in the New England Preparatory Athletic Council’s Class AAA ranks, which includes most of the region’s top prep school programs. “At 6-8 and with very good passing and dribbling skills, Novak is a tough matchup,” UMaine men’s basketball head coach Richard Barron said. “Shooting range beyond the 3-point line combined with his length and agility make him a great addition. The extra year at Hoosac will allow him to continue to fill out and continue to learn from an outstanding coach.” According to his Twitter page, Perovic made a verbal commitment to attend UMaine last April 9, then signed his National Letter of Intent on Thursday. https://bangordailynews.com/2020/11/13/sports/umaine-sports/umaine-mens-basketball-team-lands-serbian-wing-player/
  24. It's been a weird recruiting cycle with no visits and hardly any evaluations, however, it's now national signing day for the Class of 2021. University of Utah men’s basketball head coach Larry Krystkowiak announced the signing Lazar Stefanovic on Wednesday as the program’s lone signee for National Signing Day. “We’re excited to have Lazar join us next season,” head coach Larry Krystkowiak said. “Lazar is a tremendous player with high-character and an elite student so it’s a great fit both for him and our program. His experience playing in some of the top leagues in Europe and FIBA will be a tremendous boost and brings maturity to both ends of the floor.” Some fans may not have noticed yet, but the Utah basketball program has found a groove on the recruiting trail over the last couple of years. On the heels of the program’s best recruiting class under Larry Krystkowiak in 2020, Utah hoops went international to land their only commitment at the moment. With the early signing period for basketball opening up on Wednesday, UteZone takes a closer look at the lone commit in Utah basketball's 2021 class. Lazar Stefanovic, Combo Guard 6-foot-6 inches, 176 pounds 247Sports Rating - 86, Three-Star 247Sports Ranking - No. 70 SG Utah has had a lot of success with international players in recent history, and have pulled yet another top flight prospect in Stefanovic. Standing at 6’5, Stefanovic possesses good size and length for the perimeter, particularly as a ball handling guard. The old cliche is sneaky athletic, and that is exactly how to describe Stefanovic's athleticism. He doesn't appear to have the body type but he is a pretty good athlete. He would benefit from added size and lean mass in the weight room. Stefanovic is a scorer and has a knack for creating opportunities to put the ball in the hoop. Whether it be driving to the basket, pulling up in the mid-range, or shooting from behind the 3-point line, Stefanovic appears to have very good feel for how to create scoring opportunities. He has an impressive shot from deep and has converted at high clip in recent competition but will need to continue developing his shot. The 6-6 guard will arrive at Utah with plenty of playing experience as well playing in his native country of Serbia. Before the pandemic shutdown Stefanovic helped Partizan U18 claim the Adidas Next Generation Tournament in Belgrade and held his own against players in the top division, averaging 15.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists. In addition to playing with the national team, Stefanovic also made his debut with the Partizan’s top team and helped lead them to the national cup in 2020. This past season, Stefanovic also saw action in 26 games with Mladost where he averaged 20.7 minutes in their top Serbian league and averaged 7.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists. In 2018, the Serbian averaged 19.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists with the Partizan U16 squad in the Trophie Novog Grad Tournament. https://247sports.com/college/utah/Article/Utah-utes-Basketball-signing-day-larry-kystkowiak-Lazar-Stefanovic-154597247/
  25. St. Francis Brooklyn women’s basketball player Nevena Dimitrijevic took Brooklyn Heights and the Northeast Conference by storm last season. Now, the 5-foot-3 native of Kragujevac, Serbia is going national. The Terriers’ sophomore sensation and reigning NEC Rookie of the Year was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Nancy Lieberman Award Preseason Watch List on Monday. Dimitrijevic, the first Terrier ever to win league rookie of the year honors, is also the first SFC women’s player ever to be chosen as a potential finalist for the coveted award, which is named after an iconic women’s basketball legend and honors the top collegiate point guard in the nation. So how did a high school player straight out of Serbia playing for a diminutive college program on Remsen Street get mentioned with 20 of the best playmakers and ballhandlers in Division I? Simple. Dimitrijevic played better than virtually any first-year player in the region. She led the NEC with 6.2 assists per game, and ranked second on SFC in scoring with 14.2 points per contest while hitting 37.4 percent of her shots and picking up 1.9 steals per game. Dimitrijevic’s 1.74 assist-to-turnover ratio was also good for second on the Terriers, who went 8-21 overall last season and 4-14 in NEC play, which left them on the outside looking in at the conference tournament. Additionally, the business and management major finished 12th in the nation in total assists with 174 while earning All-NEC Second Team and ECAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Coincidentally, the winner of the previous three Nancy Lieberman Awards is also planning to play in Brooklyn next season. Former University of Oregon standout and current New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu won the award from 2018-20 before being selected by the Barclays Center-based franchise with the first overall pick in last summer’s WNBA Draft. While Dmitrijevic is still a safe distance from going pro, she is turning heads on the national landscape as she joins tri-state area guards Diamond Johnson of Rutgers, Syracuse’s Tiana Mangakahia and the University of Connecticut’s Paige Buekers on the Lieberman watch list. “We would like to congratulate Nevena for being selected to the 2021 Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List, which recognizes the top 20 point guards in the nation,” said SFC head coach Linda Cimino. “The Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List is a prestigious distinction, and the award has been won by some of the best to ever play the game at the collegiate level.” And Dimitrijevic would like to count herself among those players in 2021 or whenever the women’s college basketball season tips off in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. According to Cimino, her on-the-court general has what it takes to better her game as her career with the Terriers continues. “Nevena continues to work extremely hard on and off the court to improve her craft,” Cimino said. “We cannot wait to see what the future has in store for her, and we are so proud of her for all that she has accomplished here in Brooklyn Heights thus far.” Dimitrijevic should put on a show at the Pope Center for the next several years, giving her a chance to become better acquainted with Brooklyn while the nation becomes more aware of her as one of the best young players ever to lace her sneakers in a Terriers uniform. “The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to celebrate and honor both men and women at all levels of the game,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “The student-athletes we are recognizing this week on the Women’s Starting Five watch lists are tremendous athletes who deserve to be applauded. We look forward to evaluating this year’s top point guards with Nancy Lieberman, a Hall of Famer who paved the way for today’s female athletes.” Local college basketball fanatics and the Terrier faithful are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting for the Lieberman Award, presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In early February, the watch list of 20 players will be narrowed to 10 before shrinking to five in March. The winner of the award will be presented on April 9, along with the other four members of the Women’s Starting Five. https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2020/11/10/sfcs-nevena-dimitrijevic-up-for-coveted-lieberman-award/
