  1. The Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe (SISECSE) is a two-week residential workshop, that provides scholars of Eastern Europe time and space to dedicate to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. ACLS in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS) will convene leading scholars from Eastern Europe and North America for a two-week residency in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from June 13, 2024 to June 29, 2024. SISECSE will also provide participating scholars with the opportunity to undertake local fieldwork, including archival research, work in museum collections, interviews, site surveys, or other forms of data collection. Fieldwork is not a requirement for participation. This program is made possible thanks to a generous donation by Carl and Betty Pforzheimer. Details The program will offer a travel stipend and cover accommodation and per diem expenses for the two-week residency. Institute members will be expected to be in residence and to participate in all planned events for the duration of the institute. Scholars will also be provided with opportunities to travel locally during this time. Scholars should apply with their own research proposals through the ACLS online system. Writing Workshops & Immersive Discussions In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in small group writing workshops, as well as a series of immersive discussions on a broad topic of shared academic interest. In 2024, discussions will explore “The Humanities and Interpretive Social Sciences in a Time of Emergency, or Thinking Urgently.” During periods of crisis, whether they are natural disasters, violent conflicts, or global pandemics, the humanities provide critical insights and new perspectives that contribute to our understanding of the human condition, offer solace and reflection, and help us navigate uncertainty. Participants will consider diverse questions: How do the humanities or interpretive social sciences help us make sense of crises and the challenges they present? In what ways can humanistic research foster resilience, empathy, and collective action? How can humanistic scholarship inform policy-making and decision-making processes during emergencies? What distinct perspectives do different fields and disciplines offer? Discussions will be held over several meals and in one seminar session. It is not required or expected that applicant’s research projects are connected to the workshop theme. Thematic discussions are intended for the enrichment of the participants. PHILADELPHIA — The La Salle men's basketball team announced the additions of Efe Tahmaz and Milos Kovacevic to the 2023-24 roster on Wednesday. "We are thrilled to have Efe and Milos join our program," La Salle head coach Fran Dunphy said. "They are two highly skilled players who have experience playing at a high level internationally and in the U.S. They will have an impact on our program." A native of Istanbul, Turkey, Tahmaz played for KK Partizan and Beşiktaş — two of the highest club level teams in the world. Tahmaz played for KK Paritzan, a club team in Serbia, for three seasons before joining Besiktas, a club team in Turkey, for one season. While representing these teams, the 6-foot-7 forward competed in the Junior NBA league and played in the Adidas Next Generation Tournament three times. Tahmaz was the first Turkish player to play at a high level club in Serbia. Tahmaz made such an impact for KK Patrizan that he earned a chance to play in the Besiktas Super League last season. A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Kovacevic comes to 20th & Olney after playing on the junior college level in the U.S. for the past two seasons. In the U.S., Kovacevic had his most successful season at Highland Community College in Freeport, (Ill.), where he helped the Cougars win a NJCAA Region IV championship in 2022-23. During that season, the 6-foot, 9-inch forward averaged 6.3 points per game and shot 61.9 percent from the field in 31 games played, including 16 starts. Before attending Highland CC, Kovacevic played for Howard College in Big Spring, Texas in 2021-22, averaging 4.4 points per game in seven contests. Before his time in the U.S., Kovacevic played basketball on the youth level for KK Partizan. Tahmaz and Kovacevic give the Explorers three international players in their recruiting class after the team also brought aboard Swedish native Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi in July.
  22. The Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) is organising Balkathon – “Smarten up for the future”, a regional online competition that encourages Western Balkan (WB) collaboration, co-creation and real-life change, with the idea to help the region, businesses and citizens to strengthen their resilience to global challenges. Balkathon brings together young innovative people, start-ups, digital innovation centres, science parks, universities, small and medium enterprises, etc. from the Western Balkan region in order to trigger digital innovative and practical business solutions in different areas. In July 2020, RCC organised the first-ever regional competition on digital smart solutions Balkathon, as an agile solution to support the region to recover from the effects of COVID-19 pandemic. So far, three Balkathon editions have been successfully organised, and reached almost 250 registrations since the beginning of the competition, of which 15 solutions from the WB region were successfully developed and marketed. As of March 2023, Balkathon is officially the trademark of the regional competition in innovative digital solutions. Following the good practice, RCC is organising the fourth edition of Balkathon that will focus on fresh innovative digital ideas and solutions in three thematic areas that will mark this year’s competition. At Balkathon 4.0 we focus on (1) Sustainable Tourism, (2) Green Economy, and (3) Entrepreneurship. As it was the case with the previous competitions, the digital solutions must include innovative technological ideas with a clear explanation of their implementation and sustainability in one of the above mentioned areas. Balkathon 4.0 is open for teams composed of participants coming from Western Balkan economies. Teams are encouraged to include amongst their members qualified individuals; ICT companies; students; non-governmental organisations; educational institutions; start-up companies; etc. By participating in Balkathon 4.0 you will get a two-day mentoring programme with experienced experts, opportunity to win 10.000 euro for your idea, and additional mentoring support to implement your idea in the Western Balkan region. Applications are available here, and are open until 13 September 2023 (12:00h CET). Before filling out the application form please read the Balkathon guidelines carefully in order to prepare all needed information and documents. If your idea will smarten up the future, you are in the right place. Apply with your idea for Balkathon 2023.

  24. The project “A small but fertile field: strengthening Southeast European Studies in Regensburg” (seeFField) was launched in July 2022. One of its aims is to critically examine and integrate forms of knowledge production and knowledge transfer related to South-Eastern Europe in academic as well as non-academic fields. The project collaborates with the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) and other existing and emerging Area Studies initiatives at the University of Regensburg (UR), such as the Department for Interdisciplinary and Multiscalar Area Studies (DIMAS), a cluster of institutions and initiatives that is currently at the leading edge of Area Studies in Germany. It is supported by Volkswagen Foundation as a part of the programme "Global Knowledge - Structural Strengthening of Small Disciplines". Located at the intersection of competing spheres of influence, South-Eastern Europe has multiple ‘exits’ or ‘inroads’ into alternative spaces of identification and allegiance. Our current research stresses these transnational entanglements: the region offers an excellent example of the various global and transregional connections that may compete with (or threaten) the declared European affiliation. Hence, we understand an ‘area’ not as a geographical container, but as a nodal point of trans-local connections which can be traced from concrete sites to spaces ‘elsewhere’, through multiple patterns and scales of connectivity. We follow a multi-scalar and multidisciplinary approach with a strong emphasis on empirical research in analysing different social, cultural, historical, and linguistic developments in the region and synergies between them. We are pleased to announce a call for applications for our 2023/2024 International Visiting Research Fellowship Programme. We particularly encourage early career scholars from South-Eastern Europe, historians, anthropologists, linguists, and scholars of cognate disciplines, to apply. Fellows are expected to conduct research that resonates with the project’s intellectual profile, particularly developing comparative and trans-regional research perspectives. Fellows will be offered the opportunity to spend one month in Regensburg, using the IOS library, consulting colleagues at UR and IOS, attending talks and seminars, and presenting their research in our research seminar. We also encourage and support fellows to apply for long-term stays, for example, through the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation or the Marie Curie Sklodowska Programme of the EU. The one-month fellowship amounts to 4.000,00 EUR (which includes travel and accommodation). We will award a total of two fellowships for the academic year 2023/2024. Please submit your application in one PDF until 16 September 2023, via the email: fellow.see@ur.de. The application documents must include: • a brief description of your research in German or English (maximum three pages) • a detailed academic Curriculum Vitae, also naming two referees • copies of no more than three relevant articles (published or unpublished) • a statement on the preferred starting date of your stay (December 2023-June 2024). Please note that during the lecture-free period (10 February – 15 April 2023), our staff, whom you may want to consult, may be away on research trips. For more information on the project and associated scholars, visit https://seeffield.app.uni-regensburg.de .
