  1. http://www.ice.gov/n...shingtondc2.htm News Releases MAY 12, 2011WASHINGTON, DC ICE announces expanded list of science, technology, engineering, and math degree programs Qualifies eligible graduates to extend their post-graduate training WASHINGTON-U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today published an expanded list of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degree programs that qualify eligible graduates on student visas for an Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension-an important step forward in the Obama administration's continued commitment to fixing our broken immigration system and expanding access to the nation's pool of talented high skilled graduates in the science and technology fields. The announcement follows President Obama's recent remarks in El Paso, Texas, where he reiterated his strong support for new policies that embrace talented students from other countries, who enrich the nation by working in science and technology jobs and fueling innovation in their chosen fields here in the United States, as a part of comprehensive reform. By expanding the list of STEM degrees to include such fields as Neuroscience, Medical Informatics, Pharmaceutics and Drug Design, Mathematics and Computer Science, the Obama administration is helping to address shortages in certain high tech sectors of talented scientists and technology experts-permitting highly skilled foreign graduates who wish to work in their field of study upon graduation and extend their post-graduate training in the United States. Under the OPT program, foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges and universities are able to remain in the U.S. and receive training through work experience for up to 12 months. Students who graduate with one of the newly-expanded STEM degrees can remain for an additional 17 months on an OPT STEM extension. MAGAZINE FEATURES WILLAMETTE MBA COURSE AS ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY The Willamette University Atkinson Graduate School of Management's venture investing course has been named one of the 10 best entrepreneurship courses in the country by Inc. magazine. The MBA course, taught by Rob Wiltbank, associate professor of strategic management, places students in real-world angel investing groups to hear business pitches from entrepreneurs. Back in the classroom, the students share the best opportunities and use specific criteria to determine which new companies are worth an investment. They invest using real money from the Willamette Angel Fund, which was created through donations from alumni and other supporters. "The unique program ? the only one of its kind among the region's business graduate schools ? gives students insight into entrepreneurship from both sides of the table" Wiltbank says. (Read more about it in a recent feature article on the Willamette University website.) Inc. magazine's feature showcases "innovative classes that emphasize experience over study," courses that throw out the past assertion that "you can't teach entrepreneurship." The article says these classes are "distinguished by their excellence (most have won awards or been adopted by other schools), their innovation and their ambition." Read More: http://bit.ly/dTEkUP

  10. City University of New York - Graduate Center, Committee on Globalization and Social Change Post-Doctoral Fellow, Globalization and Social Change, Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in Global Age Institution Type: College / University Location: New York, United States Position: Post-Doctoral Fellow The Committee on Globalization and Social Change Postdoctoral Search 2011-2012 The Committee on Globalization and Social Change at the CUNY Graduate Center is pleased to announce a postdoctoral fellowship search for the academic year 2011-2012. Applications are invited from scholars whose research coincides with our theme for the year, "Solidarities: Politics and Ethics in a Global Age." The CGSC is an interdisciplinary working group of CUNY faculty committed to exploring the relationships among recent socioeconomic transformations associated with "globalization," the political possibilities opened or obstructed by those transformations, and the intellectual frameworks through which to grasp these developments and relations. Doing so requires that we revisit inherited analytic categories and explanatory frameworks from the standpoint of these new historical conditions. One such category is solidarity. Research foci might be organized around (but are not limited to) the following questions: Now that the institutions and ideologies underpinning those traditions have been dismantled, does the category "solidarity" retain descriptive power or critical purchase? What might the relevant units or scale of solidarity today? Conversely, can a renewed conception of solidarity help us to grasp certain aspects of the contemporary situation? Do we need to conceptualize new forms or practices of (global) solidarity as part of a (global) political project that might be adequate to our current challenges? Can solidarity allow us to think creatively about coming together within or across social formations that transcends the limitations of inherited oppositions between universality and particularity, unity and fragmentation, general standards or shared norms and relativism? Could a concept or politics of solidarity point toward new ways of reconciling democracy and plurality? If so, what are the ethical implications of a renewed conception of solidarity in an age of global circulation and interdependence? Solidarity might also signal long-distance support for multiple struggles in different places. Does "globalization" require and enable, or perhaps foreclose, new types of networked linkages as well as the technical, organizational, and imaginative resources for pursuing them? How does the global visibility of citizens actions, most recently in the Arab world, inform the terms of politics solidarity? In addition to conducting their own research, Fellows will be expected to attend and contribute to the weekly seminar of the Committee and support other initiatives of the Committee, such as the promotion of conferences, guest lectures and symposia. Postdoctoral awards are residential and normally run for the academic year September-May. In addition to the stipend and a research space, Fellows have access to all CUNY research facilities. General Duties Performs research in area(s) of expertise. Shares responsibility for committee assignments, performing administrative, supervisory, and other functions as may be assigned. There is no teaching requirement for this fellowship. Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. degree in area(s) of expertise. Also recommended are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or creative achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Preferred Qualifications To be eligible, candidates should have their doctoral dissertations in hand and must have completed their dissertations within five years of taking up the Fellowship. Individuals who are not already in tenure track positions should especially apply. Salary Range: $55,017 How to apply: To apply, please send six copies of the following COLLATED: 1) A 500 word letter of interest in relation to the activities of the Globalization Committee 2) A 1000 word personal research plan 3) Your curriculum vitae 4) One copy of a representative article or dissertation chapter 5) three letters of recommendation (can be sent separately or with your application) to: Postdoctoral Search Committee The Committee on Globalization and Social Change The Graduate Center, Room 5109 The City University of New York 365 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10016 Please send hard copies; in addition, please e-mail applications to globalization@gc.cuny.edu. I knew I was interested in having direct engagement with faculty, I liked the idea of the nurturing environment at a small school, I wanted a broad education and I wanted to go to a school with a reputation for academic excellence. Given these criteria, I researched schools primarily using college guides. (No internet in my day?I had to do my research in the library!)" Applications from India and South Korea, meanwhile, saw renewed growth after stagnating last year. The three countries send the largest numbers of international students to the United States. The report's author, Nathan E. Bell, called the findings "encouraging," saying they suggest continued strong interest around the world in American graduate education, despite increased global competition for top students. Application figures tend to overstate actual enrollment trends because prospective students may apply to multiple universities, but Mr. Bell, who is director of research and policy analysis at the graduate-schools group, said he expects international enrollments this fall to climb between 3 and 6 percent. U.S. News & World Report By Brian Burnsed April 25, 2011 Keith Graziadei, an adjunct ESL professor at Santa Monica College, was wary of putting together course packets for his students because of the rigmarole inherent in their assembly. Instead of finding the articles, securing copyright clearances, and having the materials printed, he used to simply have his students purchase two textbooks and print supplemental materials he created. This semester, however, Graziadei took part in a pilot program for a new tool called AcademicPub, which allows professors to build custom course packs online that have automatic copyright clearance. Students can purchase these online and either print them in the school bookstore, have them shipped directly by AcademicPub, or read them as a high resolution PDF via any digital reader. Rather than being forced to buy two textbooks, which can cost about $45 total, Graziadei's students have access to a custom book containing textbook chapters and his original materials that only costs $20.50. "I had never created a course pack before because my thinking was it's a lot of work involved," he says. "This made the process very streamlined and very easy."
