  1. The Open Society Documentary Photography Project is offering a grant to support alternative models for presenting and disseminating documentary photography to the public. The Audience Engagement Grant (formerly called the Distribution Grant) supports photographers to take an existing body of work on a social justice or human rights issue and devise an innovative way of using that work as a catalyst for social change. We are interested in well-designed projects that inspire audiences visually and create meaningful interactions with photographic content. Projects should combine existing bodies of work with programming or tools that give viewers a deeper, more nuanced understanding of issues and empower them to participate in the process of improving their own or others? realities. Projects should also include a partnership between a photographer and an organization that combines expertise in documentary photography with experience working on the topic or community the project addresses. Five to eight grants of $5,000 to $30,000 will be awarded. Deadlines Letter of intent (optional): Friday, March 11, 2011, 5pm EST Completed online application: Friday, May 13, 2011, 5pm EST NOTE: The online application system will NOT be available until February 1, 2011. In the meantime, you can access the application packet by clicking on the guidelines link below. http://www.soros.org/initiatives/photography/focus_areas/engagement

  18. http://mit.edu/Knight-Science/bootcamps/spring2011.html From lethal baby formula to tainted peanut butter, from biofuel bonanzas to food riots, from lean and local organics to fat-loaded meals for children, food is now routinely in the news. Researchers are speaking in terms of dramatic change and possible crises on topics of how food is grown, distributed and consumed. To help journalists explain the facts to readers, the Knight Science Journalism Fellowships is offering a week-long course on some of the most important food-related issues. Humans produce food in record abundance, and food in most places is more affordable than at any time in human history. But our progress has brought us unexpected trouble. Obesity and malnutrition now exist side by side. Farming has become an oil-intensive business and a significant contributor to the problems of climate change; the food system now uses more fossil fuel than any other sector of the economy. And, at the same time, food has become a vehicle for disease?the number of outbreaks of foodborne disease is rising, and food is moving across borders at record rates. The Boot Camp will teach the basics of the issues and address the underlying science and the overlying social, economic and political factors. This will be an intensive course?all day, every day for a week?devoted primarily to discussions and lectures. Some of the most knowledgeable researchers and leaders from universities, government and industry will teach in the workshop. We?ll also talk about the journalistic issues?how, in light of industry trends to make stories shorter and shallower, journalists can successfully cover the complexities of food and science. Twelve journalists will be selected to attend The Food Boot Camp. Winners will be announced by February 11, 2011. We will reimburse up to $750 of travel expenses to Cambridge, provide accommodation, and provide most meals to selected participants. The Workshop begins Tuesday, March 22 and runs through Friday, March 25. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Eligibility Applicants may be reporters, writers, editors or producers from any country, and must have at least three years of full-time experience in journalism. All application materials must be received by Friday, January 14, 2011.
  19. http://worldpressins.../fellowship.htm The WPI fellowship is offered to 10 journalists from countries around the world. It provides immersion into the governance, politics, business, media, journalistic ethics and culture of the United States for experienced international journalists, through a demanding schedule of study, travel and interviews throughout the country. The 2011 program will begin in mid August and end in mid-October. The fellows will spend a month in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, and then travel to several U.S. cities, including New York and Washington, D.C., for briefings, interviews and visits. They will returned to Minnesota for the final week of the program. See the 2010 Schedule for information on the 2010 fellowship and example of WPI events. Journalism — in particular, the role and responsibilities of a free press in a democracy— is the primary focus of the WPI fellowship program. First-hand knowledge of the complexity and diversity of life in the U.S. is an equally important goal. Access is the key. Over the term of the fellowship, WPI fellows gain access to a broad range of individuals and institutions ranging from the world renowned to the ordinary. Since 1961, over 500 journalists from 100 countries have benefited from the WPI experience. Selection is a competitive process. Each year hundreds of journalists apply to the program. Fellows are picked by the WPI selection committee, composed of journalists and corporate communications specialists, all with international experience. Candidates are not considered if their application package is late or incomplete. WPI pays all program costs, including transportation to the U.S. and back, all transportation within the U.S. related to the WPI program, and all lodging costs. In addition, a modest daily per diem for food is provided. Personal expenses, such as cameras, film, postage and clothing, are the responsibility of the fellows. WPI is committed to achieving racial and gender equity in its selection of fellows, topics and persons interviewed. Selection is a competitive process. Each year hundreds of journalists apply to the program. Fellows are picked by the WPI selection committee, composed of journalists and corporate communications specialists, all with international experience. Finalists for the fellowship will announced in early April. Please note that due to the number of applications received, we cannot respond to individual requests as to status. You will receive an email from WPI sometime in April telling you whether you have received a fellowship or not. During this online application process, you will be asked to provide the following: • Applicant information • Employment history and education • Two essays • Color photo of yourself • Work samples • Awards, fellowships, and certificates • Three letters of recommendation Before applying, please review the eligibility requirements, terms of the fellowship, and the guidelines for work samples, essays and recommendations. Deadline All required information, including work samples and letters of recommendation, must be received by the World Press Institute by January 31, 2011, in order for your application to be considered. Eligibility Requirements • At least five (5) years full-time employment in print, broadcast, or online journalism. Journalists can work for news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, web sites, online publications or magazines of general public interest. Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists and broadcast producers are also eligible. Those who supervise journalists are eligible providing that they also have at least five years as a working journalist. Any journalism-related work completed as a university student does not count toward experience. People who work in public relations or at organizations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible. • Must be currently employed as a non U.S. journalist working outside of the United States. • Fluency in both written and spoken English. • Potential for leadership Terms of the Fellowship WPI fellows are required to prepare for and participate in all briefings and all other scheduled WPI events. They must agree to stay for the entire program and to return to their home countries at the program's conclusion. WPI requires that fellows write for the WPI Web site, including the blog, WPI Reports, and submit up to three stories for WPI's online partners during their fellowship. They are also encouraged to file for their readers, listeners or viewers back home. Periodic reviews and evaluations are required, and WPI fellows participate in several roundtable discussions about their insights into the U.S. or international journalism issues. Fellows must have a tolerance for others of different cultures. The program involves a lot of travel, is nonstop, and fellows live out of suitcases much of the time as venues change frequently. Violations of these terms could result in termination from the program Letters of Recommendation During the online application process, you will need to provide the names and email addresses of three (3) references. WPI will contact them with information on how they can submit online letters of recommendation. Recommendations should be written by individuals familiar with your work who can comment on your journalistic abilities and potential for growth and leadership. These letters should be in English and address your experience, qualifications, and potential. One of the three recommendation should be from your immediate supervisor. Work Samples Please make sure all samples contain the date on which they were published. Most, if not all, of your samples should have been published or aired within the last two years. If your samples are not in English, please include an English summary of their contents Work samples can be uploaded with the online application.
