COMMUNITY COLLEGES: AN AFFORDABLE SPRINGBOARD TO EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS International Herald Tribune By Lubna Anwar, EducationUSA Adviser, Pakistan November 26, 2010 When I attend overseas education exhibitions in Pakistan, students say things like: "Study in the United States (US)? I would love to, but with the exchange rate, I can't afford it," or "I want to study in America, but don't know if I can cope with the academic intensity of university education there." Luckily, the US higher education platform has several alternate avenues that lead to higher academic qualifications. Two-year community colleges are a natural springboard to the US traditional four-year universities. These two-year colleges have agreements where student's credits transfer to a four-year programme, and the student gets a bachelor's degree issued by the university, where they can complete their academic programme. It is common for American students to attend a community college for two years and then transfer to a four-year institution to complete their degree. Nearly 40 per cent of all US undergraduate students attend these community colleges and alumni include people from business, education, politics, and even Hollywood actors like Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood. Foreign students are starting to discover this route to realize their dreams of education in the US in a more affordable and accessible way. Nearly 100,000 international students are currently enrolled at community colleges in the US and at least 40 two-year colleges have foreign student populations of 500 or more in their student bodies. 5. Osim onoga sto moze da se pronadje u vestima, ne znamo mnogo o domacim izvorima finansiranja. Ono sto znamo je da najveci deo pomoci koji mozete da dobijete kao strani student u Americi stize od samih institucija na koje aplicirate.
  6. http://www.columbiat...f-power/?sports Trivunovic is transfer of power Junior transfer Vesna Trivunovic leads fifth-seeded Columbia College into the NAIA Tournament, which begins Tuesday in Sioux City,Iowa. The Serbia native, who spent her first two seasons at an Illinois junior college, is tied for third in the NAIA with 4.8 kills per set. By Matt Nestor Columbia Daily Tribune Friday, November 26, 2010 Vesna Trivunovic said she doesn't remember what her expectations were when she decided to leave her native Serbia to come to the United States to play volleyball. She boiled the move down to experiencing something new while continuing her education and her volleyball career. After two seasons playing at Lake Land Community College in Mattoon, Ill., Trivunovic found something she wasn't looking for. When Trivunovic visited Columbia College, she got a chance to practice with the Cougars. She liked that she had found a team. "It's so hard to find a team that you think you're going to belong to," the junior outside hitter said. "Most of the players are just playing. I think this whole team is going along together. In my 16 years playing, I never saw like this team plays." In her first season in Columbia, Trivunovic, a native of Zrenjanin, Serbia, is one of the key components who will be leading the Cougars next week at the NAIA Tournament at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City, Iowa. The three-time champion Cougars, making their 17th straight tournament appearance, are seeded fifth overall and the top seed in Pool E. Columbia (37-2) will face Oklahoma City University on Tuesday, Rocky Mountain University on Wednesday and Azusa Pacific on Thursday. Bracket play begins Dec. 3 with semifinals and finals scheduled for Dec. 4. Combining power with a deft touch, Trivunovic makes putting a ball down ? even against defenses aligned to take her out of the game ? look as easy as 1-2-3. But in volleyball, especially against the caliber of teams the Cougars will face next week, you can't just jump to 3. Trivunovic said she wouldn't have the numbers she has without a 1 and a 2. "Volleyball's not a one-player sport. It's a whole team," Trivunovic said. "The whole team makes one good player. It's not just one. No one's the best player. The passer needs to set the ball. Setter needs to set. Hitter needs to put the ball down." And that she's done with regularity. Trivunovic, who said she declined NCAA Division I offers to play at Columbia, is among NAIA leaders in kills per set (4.8, tied for third) and total aces (71, ninth). Trivunovic has fit in seamlessly with the Cougars' up-tempo style of play. She has collected 579 total kills, which ranks fifth in the nation, despite playing in 18 fewer sets than any player inside the top eight. She wants the ball ? like Michael Jordan. And the Cougars have surrounded her with plenty of Scottie Pippens. Playing alongside All-American candidates Tally Mattos at libero and Paula Ferreira at setter has helped Trivunovic this season. But the Serbian's play has opened things up for her fellow Cougars. In the American Midwest Conference Tournament semifinals, Hannibal-LaGrange shifted its best blocker to stop Trivunovic. That allowed middle blocker Ola Shawky and right-side hitter Kelly Corkum to have career nights. "She's only getting better with us, because she's learning to play with a team," Coach Melinda Wrye-Washington said. "The team has really accepted her, and I think that really makes a big difference. Their chemistry on and off the court has taught them to play together and not be so selfish." Reach Matt Nestor at 573-815-1786 or e-mail mnestor@columbiatribune.com.

  11. The Newhouse Center for the Humanities will host three to six external fellows for the academic year 2011-12. Residencies are ordinarily for the full academic year, but one-semester residencies can also be considered. Resident fellows devote themselves primarily to their own research but also participate actively in the intellectual life of the institution: developing programming, meeting at weekly luncheons and salons, sharing their work in progress with one another and with the larger Wellesley community. In addition, Newhouse Faculty Fellows will be given the opportunity to work with the Director to design a program in which to present his/her work to the larger community while in residence - e.g. short lecture series, interdisciplinary panel, mini-conference, etc. Newhouse External Fellows are chosen through open competition and are open to both junior and senior faculty members at other institutions. Both stipended and un-stipended fellowships are available. Stipended Faculty Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $50,000 for two semesters, in addition to the research funds described below. Wellesley College faculty on sabbatical leave are encouraged to apply for Internal Fellowships or Affiliated Status at the Newhouse. For all categories of fellows, the Newhouse Center will make available private office space, some clerical support, technical and computing resources, and the collegiality of both the Center and the Wellesley community at large. In addition, research funds of up to $3,000 (pro-rated for one-semester residencies) will be available to all fellows for books, professional travel, access to collections and other associated costs of scholarly research. HOW TO APPLY Applicants for External Newhouse Faculty Fellowships should submit by December 1, 2010: 1) a research proposal of no more than 1250 words, describing the project and plan of research for the proposed residency with brief bibliography 2) a brief description of a broad programming vision in which to present his/her work while in residence 3) a curriculum vitae 4) the names and contact information of three referees 5) a cover letter that makes clear the applicant?s reasons for wishing to work at the Newhouse Center and whether the applicant is willing to be considered for an unstipended as well as a stipended fellowship. Applicants should contact recommenders directly and ask them to submit their letters by the December 1 deadline. Applicants will be notified by early March, 2011 whether or not they have received a fellowship. Applications can be submitted by regular mail to The Newhouse Center for the Humanities, Wellesley College, 106 Central St. Wellesley MA 02481-8203; or by email to nch@wellesley.edu. Wellesley College is an EO/AA educational institution and employer. The College is committed to increasing the diversity of the college community and the curriculum. Candidates who believe they will contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply. Applicants for Internal Newhouse Faculty Fellowships or Affiliated Status should submit the same materials with the following exception: internal applications require only two referees. Applicants are asked to specify whether they are applying for resident or affiliated status. Applications may be submitted electronically to nch@wellesley.edu by February 1, 2011. Decisions will be announced by mid-March, 2011. http://www.newhouse-center.org/apply.php
  12. Now in its fifth year, Columbia University School of Journalism is offering a unique graduate program which might interest some of your grantees. A number of international students on Fulbright scholarship programs have chosen to enroll in recent years. Unlike the Journalism School?s Master of Science program, which teaches students the essential skills required of every journalist, our Master of Arts program provides each student with an individualized education in the field he or she hopes to cover. Applicants select a concentration: arts and culture, business, politics, or science: health and the environment. Once enrolled, a student?s area of focus can be as broad as ?business? or as specific as architecture or bioethics. Each student comes to the program already having demonstrated competency in reporting and writing. For the most part our students are reporters, editors, and producers who have years (and, in some cases, decades) of experience, but feel they are lacking the foundation to do more challenging stories?often on complex or technical subjects. Take Greg Callus, who had been freelancing for one of Britain?s most-read political blogs,politicalbetting.com, for several years before applying for a Fulbright. After winning the grant, he chose to study political journalism at Columbia. Through the M.A. program, he?s been able to explore his overlapping interests in policy, media, and business. He?s taken separate courses about the European Union, comparative politics, and media entrepreneurship. Callus says that no matter where his career takes him, he?s ?never going to stop writing articles and books.? Recent Fulbright students have also come from countries including Greece, Spain, Pakistan, Mexico, South Africa, Belgium, Peru and Norway. All M.A. students augment high-level courses inside the journalism school with electives taken at Columbia?s other departments and professional schools. The intention is to provide the kind of intellectual grounding that enables a journalist to delve deeper into a story, asking the kind of questions an expert in the field might pose and evaluating evidence. The program attracts students who might otherwise enroll in another kind of degree program: an MBA, a Master?s in Political Science, or perhaps a public health degree. We give them the same access to top experts and cutting-edge thinking, but the framing is always journalistic. They write stories, not research papers, and conduct interviews instead of studies. Fortunately, we have been able to offer very generous financial assistance during the first several years of the program. And we have secured ongoing support from nonprofits including the Carnegie Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The M.A. program?s content-based approach to journalism education seems particularly apt today, as the industry becomes increasingly specialized. Indeed, even in this challenging environment, graduates have found jobs with some of the most esteemed news organizations, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The NewsHour, Pro Publica, and CNN. They are also writing books, producing independent documentaries, and freelancing for a variety of media outlets. M.A. brochure online: http://bit.ly/cguVsQ. If you have questions, please contact Christine Souders: cs2534@columbia.edu. Applications for next year?s M.A. class are due on January 15, 2011. www.facebook.com/Columbia-State-University

This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of the U.S. Government?s effort to promote programs in the United States and overseas that prepare Americans for a global environment and that attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. The latest Open Doors report reaffirms the United States as the destination of preference for international students and cites international student enrollments in U.S. higher education institutions are at the highest levels ever with 690,923 international students studying in the United States during the 2009-2010 academic year (Open Doors 2010). U.S. students who study abroad are choosing increasingly diverse locations overseas; 260,327 U.S. students studied abroad for academic credit during academic year 2008-2009 (Open Doors 2010). The IEW 2010 website includes a video message from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and a statement from Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, as well as promotional materials, interactive features, and opportunities to post and view planned events celebrating international educational exchanges around the world. Secretary Clinton said, ?Diplomacy does not just happen between government officials. For hundreds of thousands of students each year, exchanges promote mutual understanding and bring people of different nations together to share ideas and compare values? The Department of State remains committed to these exchanges and we strongly support expanding study abroad opportunities to a diverse range of communities so that talented students around the world can tap into the power and possibility of international exchanges.? CHE, October 28, 2010 By Eric Hoover Washington ? Much has been said about the mystique of the SAT, the nation?s most infamous test. But there?s also a sense of mystery about colleges that don?t require applicants to submit standardized-test scores. A common question: How, exactly, do admissions staffs at such colleges evaluate the applications of non-submitters? And what?s life after dropping testing requirements? At the College Board?s annual conference here, several admissions officers at ?test-optional? colleges have shared some answers. Melissa Falk, associate dean of admission and financial aid at Muhlenberg College, said reading the files of a non-submitter requires more time than reading the files of other applicants. That?s because Muhlenberg requires applicants who don?t send their scores to submit a copy of a graded paper, and to participate in an interview, either in person or by telephone. ?It adds another level of subjectivity,? Ms. Falk said. BHSU is now charging reduced non-resident tuition for all international students. This brings the yearly cost at this great 4 year public university to: Tuition and Fees: $6,410.40 (12 credit hours) Room: $2,737.70 (double room) Board: $2,991.70 (highest meal plan) Total: $12,139.80 USD *does not include living expenses estimated at USD $1,800 per year* This new cost for international students at Black Hills State University is a 38% reduction in cost over the out-of-state tuition that was previously charged. BHSU is proud to offer this reduction in tuition, however, it does not offer any further specific international student scholarships, though it does offer department scholarships for excellent students. For more information, please feel free contact Brian More at brian.more@bhsu.edu. www.facebook.com/BlackHillsState www.youtube.com/BlackHillsState -------------------- Columbia University School of Journalism Offers Unique Graduate Program Now in its fifth year, Columbia University School of Journalism is offering a unique graduate program which might interest some of your grantees.
