  1. http://www2.ohchr.or...rog.htm#english Fellowship programme for persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities* The Minorities Fellowship Programme (MFP) was launched by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in 2005. Through this Programme, the OHCHR aims to give persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities - particularly young minority women and men - an opportunity to gain knowledge on the UN system and mechanisms dealing with international human rights in general and minority rights in particular. The Fellowship Programme is intended to assist organizations and communities in protecting and promoting the rights of minorities the fellows belong to. The MFP is held annually and currently has two linguistic versions: The English programme and the Arabic programme. The English programme has been running since 2005 and lasts on average 3 months. The Arabic programme started in 2007 and has been gradually expanding from 2 to 4 weeks. The Fellows are based at the OHCHR in Geneva, Switzerland. The programme is interactive and consists of briefings on several topics (e.g. the UN system, OHCHR's work, human rights mechanisms and instruments) as well as individual and group assignments. At the end of the Programme, all Fellow should have a general knowledge of the United Nations system, international human rights instruments and mechanisms in general and those relevant to minorities in particular and be capable of further training their communities/organizations. Fellows are entitled to the following: a return ticket (economy class) from the country of residence to Geneva; basic health insurance for the duration of the Programme; and a grant to cover modest accommodation in Geneva for the duration of the Programme and other living expenses. Who can apply? 1. The candidate must belong to a national, ethnic, linguistic or religious minority group (persons who do not belong to a minority group will not be taken into consideration, even if they have close links with minority communities and/or organizations)NOTE: If your community identifies as indigenous, please do not apply to this programme but to our indigenous fellowship programme instead (see http://www2.ohchr.or.../fellowship.htm). Please note that the indigenous fellowship is a separate programme and has different application forms and deadlines. 2. Age should not be a limitation to participation in the Minorities Fellowship Programme, although preference initially will be given to candidates between 25 - 35 years. 3. Formal education should not be a limitation to participation in the Minorities Fellowship Programme, if relevant experience can be demonstrated. 4. Candidates should have ability, willingness and possibility to train other persons belonging to minorities upon return to their respective communities/organizations and should agree to do so. 5. The candidates must have a good working knowledge of the language in which the programme is imparted (i.e. English for the English programme and Arabic for the Arabic programme). 6. The candidate should be proposed and his/her candidacy supported by his/her organization and/or community. It is desirable that the sponsoring organization has a firm constituency or membership, is representative, undertakes work on minority issues and is composed of persons belonging to minorities. 7. The overall goal of the Minorities Fellowship Programme is to offer persons belonging to minorities the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in the field of international human rights in order to assist their organizations and communities in protecting and promoting human and minority rights. Therefore, it is important that the candidate proposed and nominated by a minority organization or community be someone who will return to his or her NGO to work in this field. Selection process The selection of fellows reflects a gender and regional balance. The general human rights situation in the respective regions/countries is also taken into consideration as is the situation of the minority community to which the applicant belongs to. For the English programme, a pre-selection of 15 (first five preferences and 10 alternates) candidates is made by previous minority fellows. The final selection of successful candidates is undertaken by an advisory group composed of OHCHR staff. As the Arabic programme expands in the future, similar selection process will be established. In view of the large number of applications, we regret to inform that only successful candidates will be contacted. How to apply? Fellowship applications will only be taken into consideration if they are fully completed. Both parts I and II must be signed and faxed, sent by regular post or scanned and E-mailed to the following address: Minorities Fellowship Programme Indigenous Peoples and Minorities Unit Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Palais des Nations 8-14 Avenue de la Paix CH-1211 Geneva 10 Switzerland Telefax number: (+41 22) 928 90 66 E-mail: minorityfellowships@ohchr.org Application forms need to be accompanied by an official recommendation letter from the nominating organization or community. 2. The Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship is available to qualified graduate students. It is created in honor of Gloria Barron, dedicated educator and tireless advocate for wilderness protection, and administered by The Wilderness Society, a leading conservation organization based in Washington, D.C. We award a $10,000 scholarship to a graduate student for the coming academic year to support research and preparation of a paper on an aspect of wilderness. We strongly encourage proposals relating to climate change, as well as other topics regarding wilderness conservation. Additional funding will be provided to pay travel expenses for the recipient to work with staff members of The Wilderness Society on this project. The Wilderness Society wishes to encourage the publication of this work in an academic journal or other appropriate medium and has additional funds to help cover expenses of publishing and publicizing the final paper. The scholarship seeks to encourage individuals who have the potential to make a significant positive difference in the long term protection of wilderness in North America. In the past, individuals like Aldo Leopold and Rachel Carson have made that kind of lasting difference. They possessed all the skills needed to excel in their respective professions, but they also possessed something more: the courage and the vision to think afresh about how and why to protect our wild lands and the ability to communicate those ideas effectively to others. Application Procedures and Guidelines 1. Eligibility Requirements for Scholarship Applications Graduate students meeting the eligibility requirements noted below may apply directly to The Wilderness Society. If you are an applicant, please make sure you meet all of the scholarship eligibility requirements and follow the application procedures below. Applicants for the Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship must: be enrolled in an accredited graduate institution in North America; have strong academic qualifications; have academic and/or career goals focused on making a significant positive difference in the long-term protection of wilderness in North America. Graduate students in natural resources management, law or policy programs are strongly encouraged to apply. 2. Application Procedure All students applying for the Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship must submit the following materials for an application to be considered complete: A two-page double-spaced cover letter. The letter must offer insights into the personal motivations of the applicant as well as how wilderness has influenced your life. If, in the course of this essay, you could give us some understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, this would also be helpful. A 3-5 page double-spaced proposal. The proposal must include a description of the proposed work and a timeline for completion of a paper within 24 months. The 5-page proposal limit does not include your list of references/citations. See Research Topics for guidelines. A current résumé or curriculum vitae. Two letters of recommendation describing the applicant's ability to meet the objectives of the scholarship and proposed work. The letters can be included with the rest of the application materials or recommenders can e-mail them directly to barron_scholarship@tws.org. Scanned undergraduate and graduate transcripts (official or unofficial). All application materials must be submitted to Barron_scholarship@tws.org no later than 5:00 pm Eastern, March 31. Faxes or mail applications are not acceptable. 3. Research Topics The research paper should address an aspect of the establishment, protection, or management of wilderness. The applicant may choose to discuss a subject relevant to current programs of The Wilderness Society. It may apply to a particular landscape or it may address issues broadly. The following themes are suggested research topics: Restoration of the health and function of wilderness. For example: what is "good" ecological restoration?; what is the proper scale and at what point can a system be considered restored? Reserve design in the context of ecosystem management. Research into the role of reserves in the conservation of ecosystem integrity and/or the effect of climate change scenarios on reserve design would fall under this heading. Management impacts on wildland ecosystems. Question like how do roads affect ecosystem function and what roles should roadless areas play in protecting ecosystem integrity, what are the ecological and social impacts of grazing in wildland ecosystems, and what can be done to protect wildland ecosystems from biological invasion are examples. Valuing wildlands. Topics include how wildland protection contributes to rural economic health and the design of policies and programs to help rural communities leverage the economic value of protecting wildland ecosystems. Connecting people to wildlands. The contributions of wilderness to public health and well-being, particularly for residents of metropolitan areas, are possible topics under this heading. Impacts of climate change. Potential research questions include: what are the terrestrial and aquatic impacts of climate change on wilderness areas and wilderness resources; what is the relationship between wildland fire, carbon emissions/sequestration, and climate change; what are the economic effects of climate change on wildland ecosystem services such as water quality and quantity; and what are the implications of climate change for wilderness management? Important: Research proposals related to climate change are strongly encouraged. 4. Scholarship Requirements Scholarship Payments: The scholarship is paid in two installments, the first in August for $7,000 and the second in February for the remaining $3,000. The recipient may be liable for income tax on the scholarship. Please consult with your tax advisor on the proper treatment of the award. Additional funding will be provided to pay travel expenses for the recipient to work with staff members of The Wilderness Society on this project. The Society wishes to encourage the publication of this work in an academic journal or other appropriate medium and has additional funds to help cover expenses of publishing and publicizing the final paper. Progress and Final Reports The recipients are required to submit a paper describing the findings of their research project within 24 months of receiving the award. АСТ će u ovom krugu testiranja biti moguće polagati u Međunarodnom akademskom centru u Beogradu 12. juna 2010. godine, a potom u oktobru, decembru, februaru, aprilu i junu tokom testiranja u 2010-2011. godini. # # # March 2, 2010. International Academic Center in BelgradeEstablished As ACT International Test Center The International Academic Center in Belgrade has been established as an official international test center for the ACT college admission and placement exam. The ACT is a requirement for students planning to pursue their undergraduate degree at most colleges and universities in the United States. ACT scores are used in the admission process to help U.S. colleges and universities determine how ready applicants are to succeed in first-year coursework at their institution. Many colleges also use ACT scores to help place first-year students in courses appropriate to their level of skills and to award college credit. The ACT is the only exam accepted for admission purposes by every single four-year college and university in the United States, including all Ivy League institutions. The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. It consists of four required multiple-choice tests in English, mathematics, reading and science and an optional essay writing test. Some U.S. colleges require students to submit writing scores, but many do not. The ACT is administered internationally on five annual test dates occurring in October, December, February, April, and June. Not all ACT test centers offer the exam on all five test dates. The ACT will be offered this testing cycle at the International Academic Center in Belgrade on the June 12, 2010, and then on the October, December, February, April and June test dates beginning in the 2010-2011 testing cycle. To register to take the ACT at this location, students must visit ACT's website, www.actstudent.org, and follow the online registration procedures. The deadline to register is the Friday five weeks before each test date. For the June 2010 test date, the registration deadline is May 7, 2010. The international registration fee is $58 for the traditional ACT and $73 for the ACT Plus Writing. The optional ACT Writing Test is offered on selected test dates internationally. ACT's website, www.actstudent.org, offers students helpful information, free sample tests and inexpensive test prep materials. # # #

  16. As we can see, loans are available for US citizens only at this point. That doesn't mean you can't find some other source of financing, but then it means you would have to find somebody to co-sign on the loan application. The other person must be an American citizen. Try to schedule arrival to some of our graduate advising session where you can establish broader view on future studies in the US. You don't have to limit yourself to just one university.
  17. http://www.soros.org.../hesp/focus/afp Academic Fellowship Program The Open Society Institute's International Higher Education Support Program (HESP) launched the Academic Fellowship Program (AFP) in 2004 to support and guide higher education reform in South Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union (excluding the Baltic states), and Mongolia. Although the program readily evolves to meet the changing and varied educational challenges of the region, its aim remains to achieve lasting higher education reform by assisting progressive university departments and by supporting promising scholars who teach at these departments after they have returned from abroad with an internationally competitive master's or other postgraduate degree. Recognizing that universities play a fundamental role in strengthening civil society, AFP focuses on higher education reforms that will bolster open, democratic societies. Changing the Face of Education Higher education reform in the countries targeted by AFP is often impeded by lack of funding, ineffective education policies, poor planning and management, reliance on traditional curricula that emphasize passive rather than active learning, limited flexibility in career choices, corruption, and elitism. The Academic Fellowship Program seeks to diminish these obstacles by contributing to the reform of higher education and helping to build academic networks locally, regionally, and globally. The program focuses on aiding both the educational institution and the individual scholar in two main ways: AFP assists reform-minded departments in their efforts to achieve world-class academic stature and become models of innovation and reform in their region. AFP supports promising young scholars by promoting their return to the region, their positioning within academe, and their continued professional development within a healthy academic setting. To achieve these goals, AFP offers two fellowship programs: the Returning Scholars Fellowship Program and the International Scholars Fellowship Program. Returning Scholars Fellowship Program The program, as part of a conscious strategy to combat "brain drain" in the social sciences and humanities, supports talented scholars who, after earning a postgraduate degree abroad, seek university positions and academic careers in their home countries. Securing the services of such scholars is essential to the revitalization of academic departments and the sustainability of higher education reforms. The program offers scholars financial, professional, and departmental development support, as well as opportunities for further professional growth as AFP alumni. For more information, view the Returning Scholars grant guidelines. International Scholars Fellowship Program The program selects highly qualified scholars in the social sciences and humanities to assist AFP partner departments where Returning Scholars are placed. International Scholars advise on the overall reform agenda of the departments and share with departmental colleagues the latest developments in their discipline, collaborate on the introduction of new courses, and encourage the development of skills critical to academic work. Perhaps the greatest, and most needed, contribution of International Scholars is the expert advice they offer on curriculum development and academic planning. For more information, view the International Scholars grant guidelines. Program Effectiveness AFP fellows are placed in departments that have been carefully selected as AFP partners. Partnerships are established on the basis of the departments' openness to change and advancement, and clear visions for future development. Returning Scholars working in such environments will find the support and encouragement they need to launch and pursue their academic careers while at the same time contributing to the development of the departments. Partner departments are encouraged to take the lead in recruiting qualified Returning and International Scholars whose professional profiles match departmental needs. Selection of Partner Departments Departments are chosen based on several criteria: awareness of the need for educational reform, demonstrated willingness to embrace change, and concrete, realistic plans for achieving lasting reform. AFP gathers detailed information on departments at universities throughout the region, using written questionnaires, interviews, and site visits. Departments meeting program criteria are invited to submit detailed proposals for AFP support, outlining their plans for development over the course of several years. Based on these proposals, AFP selects the most promising departments for collaboration. A current list of partner departments can be found below. AFP partner departments benefit in many ways from the presence and activities of International and Returning Scholars. AFP invites fellows to submit proposals forDepartmental Development Projects and to play an active role in the implemention of the AFP strategy for partner departments. Funding for Professional Development is also available for fellows, and professional development and training opportunities are offered to core faculty (non-AFP scholars) as well. The AFP Mobility Fund is designed to support faculty visits between AFP partner departments. Specific areas of focus include curriculum development and teaching excellence. AFP promotes best practices in education through training events, workshops, and roundtables. The program also provides support for projects to extend the impact of teaching by incorporating fellows' research in their teaching. Download a list of current AFP partner departments below. Alumni Involvement AFP treats alumni as a core program component by integrating them into on-going education reform efforts and providing them with a framework for regional and international collaboration. The AFP Alumni Fund offers financial support to alumni who wish to contribute their extensive academic expertise and professional skills to the development of AFP partner departments. The fund is open to alumni of AFP, the Civic Education Project (CEP), and the Support for Community Outreach and University Teaching (SCOUT) Program. 19. http://www.foei.org/...set_language=en fifth annual photo competition Friends of the Earth International is excited to announce our fifth annual photo competition, carried out this year for the first time in collaboration with La v?a Campesina and the Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change. This international photo competition will gather photos from around the world on the theme of "Acting in Solidarity and Building Movements for Change". The best shots will be featured in materials produced by these organizations and social movements, including a 2011 calendar and an international photo exhibition. what kind of photos are we looking for? The theme of this year's competition grew from our conviction that people working together can have a powerful impact in bringing about a better world. Acting in solidarity is when people join together to support each other's struggles. It involves understanding, responsibility, commitment, and for people in many parts of the world, great courage. Without solidarity, movements cannot grow and bring about the social, environmental, economic and political change that people around the world are calling for. In recent years, we have seen the massive growth of movements for change. These movements are mobilizing people who reject the current model of neoliberal economic globalization and environmental destruction in favor of a peaceful, just and sustainable world. As these movements grow in size and power, they offer a serious challenge to the 'business-as-usual' model that exploits people and the environment. categories for entries For this competition we are looking for photos of people working in solidarity in order to bring about change, as well as photos of social movements in action. With more than 2 million members and supporters around the world, we campaign on today's most urgent environmental and social issues. We challenge the current model of economic and corporate globalization, and promote solutions that will help to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies. La v?a Campesina is an international movement of peasants, small- and medium-sized producers, landless, rural women, indigenous people, rural youth and agricultural workers. They develop solidarity and unity among small farmer organizations in order to promote gender parity and social justice in fair economic relations; the preservation of land, water, seeds and other natural resources; food sovereignty; and sustainable agricultural production based on small and medium-sized producers. The Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change (MOVIACC), still in development, consists of groups who are creating a process of mobilization, resistance and transformation in order to put pressure on the political authorities and those in power to protect natural resources, reduce land vulnerability and demand justice and sovereignty.
