Martin Chung’s project “Reconciliation and Its Resentments: The Suppression of Justice and Truth Recovery in Germany, Northern Ireland, and Western Balkans”.

  6. Arguably the Bruins’ top target left in the class of 2023 has narrowed his choices down once again.

UCLA men’s basketball has been pegged as a top-four finalist for class of 2023 small forward Andrej Stojakovic, the 6-foot-7 recruit announced Wednesday. The Jesuit (CA) product named Stanford, Texas and Oregon as his other finalists, with all three programs having received official visits and the latter two universities hosting Stojakovic within the past few weeks.

Duke and Virginia did not make the cut after previously being named to Stojakovic’s top six.

Stojakovic told On3's Joe Tipton that he was aiming for Oct. 31 as an eventual commitment date, but that he hasn't officially locked that in just yet.

Coach Mick Cronin and the Bruins have been the longtime favorites for Stojakovic’s commitment, receiving a combined four 247Sports Crystal Balls in their favor in June and July. Several Rivals recruiting experts have predicted Stojakovic to end up with UCLA in September as well.

Stojakovic took an official visit to Westwood on June 14, less than a week after Cronin hired Serbia native Ivo Simovic as a new assistant coach. Stojakovic is the son of former NBA champion Peja Stojakovic – who is Serbian himself – creating a link between the younger Stojakovic, his family and the Bruins’ new international coach.

UCLA assistant coach Rod Palmer, meanwhile, was a co-founder of the Compton Magic – Stojakovic's AAU team – creating a second tie between the Bruins to Carmichael, California, native.

The Magic have produced a handful of UCLA basketball alumni over the past few years. Johnny Juzang, Jaylen Hands, Jaylen Clark, Jules Bernard, Dylan Andrews, Jalen Hill, Ike Anigbogu and TJ Leaf all donned Magic jerseys before playing in Westwood. Stojakovic could become the next if he were to choose the Bruins, although he wouldn't be the first in his class to do so – four-star power forward and Stojakovic's Magic teammate Devin Williams committed to UCLA in August.

Stojakovic is a four-star prospect, according to 247Sports, Rivals, ESPN and On3, while the 247Sports Composite has him rated at five stars. According to the 247Sports Composite, Stojakovic is the No. 4 small forward in the country, the No. 5 recruit in California and the No. 21 overall prospect in his class.

The class of 2023 marks an integral shift in scholarship distribution and roster construction for Cronin and UCLA. Veteran players Jaime Jaquez, Tyger Campbell and David Singleton are likely spending their final year in Westwood, while freshmen Amari Bailey and Adem Bona have the potential to become one-and-done players.

Four-star forwards Brandon Williams and Devin Williams have committed to being a part of the Bruins’ upcoming recruiting class, which now ranks No. 21 in the country. UCLA is still waiting on decisions from five-star prospects Isaiah Collier and Ron Holland, although neither seems likely to wear blue and gold at the college level.

Stojakovic therefore stands as the most likely prospect to select UCLA as his future destination among their five-star targets. However, the Serbian-Greek teenager has taken his time in deciding which program he will call home, leading to more speculation as time ticks on.

  13. Sara Pushtahija arrived in El Paso this summer from her native Belgrade, the capital of Serbia (almost exactly 10,000 kilometers from Memorial Gym), as a centerpiece of UTEP's latest freshman volleyball recruiting class.

The 6-foot outside hitter became the second Serbian on the team along with Ema Uskokovic and the third international player. The Miners open their season at a tournament in Evanston, Ill., on Friday.

What brought you from Serbia to El Paso?

UTEP was the most aggressive team (recruiting) the past year and I think they can be even better. I had the offer from coach Ben (Wallis), I knew a player from Serbia. I wanted to come and meet all these people, meet El Paso. I made a good decision.

I think we have a pretty good team and I think the thing that can help us is team bonding. We're pretty close, that will help us. We are like a family.

Has going so far from home been challenging?

It is very different. It's difficult to leave your family, be so much further from home. But the opportunity with volleyball, school, this kind of education, it's a high level. My sacrifice will pay off.

Has it helped being on a team with two other players from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean?

It helps me to be near someone who understands me. I have a teammate from Turkey (Hande Yetis), from Serbia too. I talked to them when I had a hard time being away from home, homesick. I know we're in the same box, it's really helpful to have someone like that from across the ocean.

All my teammates have been great. When I came here in the summer they were open-minded. When I got here my English was not that good, and they accepted that and understood me. They've been awesome.

What's your favorite thing so far about El Paso?

I haven't had any opportunities for sightseeing, but when we catch a break, maybe spring, I'll go see a lot of places. I really do like the food, it's a lot different from home and I like to try new things, so the food. And the people. The people are so nice. I really enjoy talking to them.

The weather here is so much different, it's so hot. I was here for two months (over the summer) and now I'm used to it.

What's your favorite El Paso food?

I didn't want to, but coach Ben made me try your beans, the Mexican beans, the El Paso beans. I refused the first time, then I tried it and it was so good. I thought it was going to be so spicy I couldn't eat it, but they were so good.

    What's your favorite Serbian food?

My favorite Serbian meal is sarma, it's ground meat in a cabbage. My mom makes it, I can't wait to go home and eat it again.

What does a visitor to Belgrade have to do and see?

They have to see Belgrade Fortress. If you're in Belgrade and you're young I'd recommend the nightlife because Belgrade is most known for the nightlife and the clubs. But if you're a sightseeing person, I'd say Belgrade Fortress.

Who are the most famous Serbians?

    Novak Djokovic and Nikola Jokić.

How did you start playing volleyball?

It was in elementary school. My dad was a volleyball coach, I wanted to be like the girls he coached. I admired them. I always wanted to play volleyball, I never had other sports in my mind. Volleyball and that's it.

What strengths do you bring to the Miners?

I'm a pretty good communicator. I'm loud. I'm not loud enough now, but I think I will relax eventually and I think I can be a leader. Now I'm young, so I have time to learn from the veterans, they are awesome. They are guiding me, I can't wait to learn from them.

  14. The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team went to great lengths — 7,965 miles — to secure a commitment from a 6-foot-8, 215-pound wing from Nis, Serbia.

“I’m excited about coming,” said Matija Svetozarevic, who signed a scholarship agreement and will join the Rainbow Warriors this month. “I know Hawaii has its own culture. I know it’s famous for its beaches and nature.”

Svetozarevic is transferring from Portland, where he played in 28 games, starting one, as a freshman the past season. He averaged 9.7 minutes, but connected on a 93.8% of his free throws (15-for-16). With the Pilots bringing in several older transfers, Svetozarevic was expected to have a reserve role this coming season.

“I started looking at other options,” Svetozarevic said of entering the NCAA’s transfer portal. “I got in touch with (UH associate head coach) John Montgomery. We started talking more and more. Then they offered me, and I accepted the offer.”

Svetozarevic could fill the role vacated by wing/post Jerome Desrosiers’ completion of his NCAA eligibility. Svetozarevic also can play — and defend — the three and four, as well as provide long-range shooting.

Svetozarevic was involved with the Serbian Youth National Team, helping the U-16 team place fifth in the 2018 FIBA European Championships. He also has trained as an amateur with KK Dynamic, a club team. At the urging of friends and teammates, Svetozarevic decided he could advance his basketball skills better in the United States. Through several contacts, he received offers from colleges. “Portland was the best option at the time,” he said.

The ’Bows fill their 13 scholarships with Svetozarevic’s signing.

  15. Workshop Details

The program will cover travel, accommodation, and per diem expenses for the two-week residential institute.

Institute members will be expected to be in residence and to participate in all planned events for the duration of the institute.

Scholars will also be provided with opportunities to travel locally during this time.

Scholars should apply with their own research proposals through the ACLS online system.

This program is made possible thanks to a generous donation by Carl and Betty Pforzheimer.

    Summary

The Summer Institute for the Study of East Central and Southeastern Europe (SISECSE) is a two-week residential fellowship, that provides scholars of Eastern Europe the opportunity to undertake local fieldwork in Bulgaria. ACLS in partnership with the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS) will convene leading scholars from Eastern Europe and North America for a two-week residency in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria from June 1, 2023 to June 15, 2023.

SISECSE will provide participating scholars with two weeks to dedicate to their own research and writing in a collaborative and interdisciplinary setting. Participants will be able to undertake local fieldwork, including archival research, work in museum collections, interviews, site surveys, or other forms of data collection.

    Immersive Discussions

In addition to conducting their own research, scholars will also have the opportunity to participate in small group writing workshops, as well as a series of immersive discussions on a broad topic of shared academic interest.

In 2023, discussions will explore “Scholarly Writing in the Digital Age.” Participants will be asked to consider broad questions of accessibility and audience; the democratization of scholarly writing, manifested in the expansion of acceptable writing styles in journals and books; the blur between scholarly writing and creative writing, essays, and memoirs; the implications of digital sources for the way scholars treat their work; the potential of graphics and digital publication; the perceived over-production of articles and books; changing institutional frameworks and cultures of academic writing, and the growing demands for wider impact while retaining intellectual substance; and more.

Discussions will be held over several meals and in one seminar session.

Please note: It is not required or expected that applicant’s research projects are connected to the workshop theme. Thematic discussions are intended for the enrichment of the participants.
