The Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) is an interdisciplinary research center in Regensburg, Germany, exploring historical, economic, and political developments in Eastern and South-eastern Europe. In 2017, IOS joined the Leibniz Association, one of the leading associations of research institutions in Germany. IOS closely cooperates with the University of Regensburg.

IOS is now searching for a  Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d) (part-time, 65%) in History (or adjacent fields), starting as early as possible in the newly approved project “Political, Social, and Cultural Narratives of Demographic Change in Southeastern Europe”.

Remuneration is based on the German TV-L public pay scale, up to salary group E13. The appointment is for 42 months.

The position is part of the international research project “Transforming Anxieties of Ageing in Southeastern Europe. Political, Social, and Cultural Narratives of Demographic Change”, which will be funded by the Volkswagen Foundation in the framework of their program “Challenges for Europe: The Greying Continent”.

The project is coordinated by IOS, with partners at the University of Graz, Sofia University, and the Demographic Research Institute of the Hungarian Statistical Office. The doctoral researcher will specifically do research on the project carried out by IOS on “Socialist legacies and ambivalent transitions”.

The successful candidate will pursue a PhD project on discourses and policies of ageing and demographic change in Southeastern Europe, looking in the socialist as well as early post-socialist periods. The PhD project should ideally be comparative.

Your tasks:

• Conducting original research in the framework of the project

• Finishing a dissertation manuscript

• Contributing to the project’s dissemination and communication activities

• Publication of academic articles

• Presentation of the research to academic and non-academic audiences

• Data collection and processing  

We expect from you:

• A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in history or a cognate discipline

• Experience of empirical research

• Proficiency in at least one Southeast European language

• Excellent English, knowledge of German will be a plus

• Interest in multidisciplinary cooperation

• Good communications skills, flexibility, reliability, team spirit

We can offer work at a leading academic institution with an international and interdisciplinary team. IOS will facilitate the enrolment in the PhD program of the University of Regensburg. We provide support for doctoral training, including transferable skills, German language classes and networking.
