fifth annual photo competition

Friends of the Earth International is excited to announce our fifth annual photo competition, carried out this year for the first time in collaboration with La v?a Campesina and the Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change.

This international photo competition will gather photos from around the world on the theme of "Acting in Solidarity and Building Movements for Change". The best shots will be featured in materials produced by these organizations and social movements, including a 2011 calendar and an international photo exhibition.

what kind of photos are we looking for?

The theme of this year's competition grew from our conviction that people working together can have a powerful impact in bringing about a better world.

Acting in solidarity is when people join together to support each other's struggles. It involves understanding, responsibility, commitment, and for people in many parts of the world, great courage. Without solidarity, movements cannot grow and bring about the social, environmental, economic and political change that people around the world are calling for.

In recent years, we have seen the massive growth of movements for change. These movements are mobilizing people who reject the current model of neoliberal economic globalization and environmental destruction in favor of a peaceful, just and sustainable world. As these movements grow in size and power, they offer a serious challenge to the 'business-as-usual' model that exploits people and the environment.

categories for entries

For this competition we are looking for photos of people working in solidarity in order to bring about change, as well as photos of social movements in action.

We have given some ideas for subjects within both photo categories, but please do use your imagination when taking and submitting photos.

• acting in solidarity
  For this category we are looking for photos that capture the essence of solidarity between people. People connecting and supporting each other, often transcending boundaries of age, race, gender and class, in order to reach a common goal. Solidarity implies courage, emotion, connection and collaboration. See if you can capture these elements in your images!
• movements for change
  For this category we are looking for photos that capture the power and passion of movements for social and environmental change. These might include marches, demonstrations, protests, vigils, non-violent direct actions, occupations, festivals, and so forth.

who can enter?

Our competition is open to everyone, and we particularly encourage women, young people, and people living in the developing world to enter.

when is the deadline for entries?

The deadline for entries is 1 April 2010, but we appreciate receiving photos as soon as possible!

who will judge the photos?

In addition to representatives of our organizations, our panel of judges will include:

what happens with the winning photos?

The judges will choose a total of 12 winning photographs (6 from each category), as well as three "popular choice" photo per category that will be selected by our member groups and allies. The winning photos will be announced in mid-April 2010.

Photos, both winning and non-winning, may also be used by Friends of the Earth International, La v?a Campesina, the World March of Women and the Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change for our publications and materials, in which case the photographers name, e-mail address and/or website will be used in connection with the image.

are there prizes for the winners?

There are cash prizes for the winners: 400 euros for each first place photo; 200 euros for each second place photo; and 100 euros for each third place photo.

what are the rules for entry?

• Entries must be received by 1 April 2010.
• Entries should reflect the theme of Acting in Solidarity and Building Movements for Change.
• You may submit up to 3 photos per category (for a total of 6 photos).
• Please send each entry in a separate e-mail, and list the following:
  a) your name
  b your country
  c) the category in which you are entering the photo (Acting in Solidarity, or Building Movements for Change)
  d) a short caption (one sentence) for the photo that describes the image.
  e) the place the photo was taken
  f) the date the photo was taken
  g) your e-mail
  h) your website (if applicable)
  i) your postal address
  j) your telephone number
  k) your age
  l) your gender
• You can e-mail your photos to photos@foei.org or send them on cd. The size should be at least 1819 x 2598 pixels [154 x 220mm horizontal] at 300 dpi resolution, supplied in jpeg format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB.
• You can also post your images. They should print out at 300 dpi, 8.5 by 5.5 inches, and be sent to: Ann Doherty, Friends of the Earth International, PO Box 19199, 1000 GD, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Please be aware that photos sent by post will not be returned.
• By entering the contest, you give Friends of the Earth International, our member groups, La v?a Campesina and the Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change permission to publish the submitted photo(s) in our calendar, photo exhibit and other materials. Published photos will be credited with your name, e-mail address and/or website. If you do not wish your photos to be used for materials other than the calendar and photo exhibit, please make that clear when you submit the photos.
• We reserve the right to crop the images as we see fit.
• Entries must be your own work.
• Entries should not have won previous competitions, and should not have been published elsewhere.
• No responsibility is accepted for ineligible entries or entries made fraudulently.
• By entering this competition you are accepting these rules and agree to be bound by them.

La v?a Campesina is an international movement of peasants, small- and medium-sized producers, landless, rural women, indigenous people, rural youth and agricultural workers. They develop solidarity and unity among small farmer organizations in order to promote gender parity and social justice in fair economic relations; the preservation of land, water, seeds and other natural resources; food sovereignty; and sustainable agricultural production based on small and medium-sized producers.

The Movement of Victims Affected by Climate Change (MOVIACC), still in development, consists of groups who are creating a process of mobilization, resistance and transformation in order to put pressure on the political authorities and those in power to protect natural resources, reduce land vulnerability and demand justice and sovereignty.
