New Writing Opportunity to Have Your Voice Heard

In Our Own Words: Holding Hands

Do you have a story that begins with another person's hand in yours? Do you have strong memories of the wrinkled hand of a beloved grandmother? Has your life been changed by the grasping hand of a child? The reassuring hand of a friend?

This year World Pulse kicked off a new feature in our print magazine called My Story. My Story highlights personal stories of women around the world describing pivotal experiences in their lives, in their own words. For our next edition, themed Embody, we are asking for submissions on the topic of "Holding Hands."

We invite you to tell us a story about "holding hands," whatever this phrase evokes in you. Do you see holding hands as a revolutionary act? An opening for a heart connection? A bridge across generations? A cure for loneliness? An antidote to violence? Can holding hands change the world?

Your story might explore themes of mentorship, connection, taboo, solidarity, violence, relationships, sensuality, family, love, friendship, healing, bridging difference, or anything in between. We encourage you to broadly interpret the theme.

Everyone who participates will self-publish their story on our social networking website, PulseWire, and 6-8 stories will be chosen for publication in the Fall 2010 edition of World Pulse Magazine. The top three stories, in addition to being published, will receive a $100 honorarium and everyone whose stories are chosen for publication will receive a copy of the magazine.

How to Participate

Here are the three steps to take. Get started today!

  • Register an account on PulseWire here and fill out your profile. To be considered you must fill out a complete profile.

My Story Guidelines

  • Topic: Holding Hands. We encourage creative interpretations of this general theme, but the piece must be non-fiction. We look for unique, honest, personal, and creative entries that showcase the true-life stories of women and their allies in their own words. Speak your truth and let your story be told!
  • Length: 400 words, maximum.
  • Dates: Submit your story between now and June 4, 2010. All stories must be submitted by 11:59pm, PST on June 4, 2010. Please use the time and date converter tool here to find out when this is in your local time.
  • Only one story per person will be evaluated.

We look forward to reading your story about Holding Hands. Thank you for joining us and sharing your voice with the world!
