External Newhouse Faculty Fellowships

The Newhouse Center for the Humanities will host three to six external fellows for the academic year 2011-12. Residencies are ordinarily for the full academic year, but one-semester residencies can also be considered. Resident fellows devote themselves primarily to their own research but also participate actively in the intellectual life of the institution: developing programming, meeting at weekly luncheons and salons, sharing their work in progress with one another and with the larger Wellesley community.

In addition, Newhouse Faculty Fellows will be given the opportunity to work with the Director to design a program in which to present his/her work to the larger community while in residence - e.g. short lecture series, interdisciplinary panel, mini-conference, etc.

Newhouse External Fellows are chosen through open competition and are open to both junior and senior faculty members at other institutions. Both stipended and un-stipended fellowships are available. Stipended Faculty Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $50,000 for two semesters, in addition to the research funds described below. Wellesley College faculty on sabbatical leave are encouraged to apply for Internal Fellowships or Affiliated Status at the Newhouse.

For all categories of fellows, the Newhouse Center will make available private office space, some clerical support, technical and computing resources, and the collegiality of both the Center and the Wellesley community at large. In addition, research funds of up to $3,000 (pro-rated for one-semester residencies) will be available to all fellows for books, professional travel, access to collections and other associated costs of scholarly research.

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants for External Newhouse Faculty Fellowships should submit by December 1, 2010:

1) a research proposal of no more than 1250 words, describing the project and plan of research for the proposed residency with brief bibliography

2) a brief description of a broad programming vision in which to present his/her work while in residence

3) a curriculum vitae

4) the names and contact information of three referees

5) a cover letter that makes clear the applicant?s reasons for wishing to work at the Newhouse Center and whether the applicant is willing to be considered for an unstipended as well as a stipended fellowship.

Applicants should contact recommenders directly and ask them to submit their letters by the December 1 deadline. Applicants will be notified by early March, 2011 whether or not they have received a fellowship.
