Medical Technology between West and East

Social and cultural dimensions of medical technology in a comparative perspective are the topic of the scholarship. The PhD scholar will conduct research analysing the developments and exchange/trade of medical technology between West and East. Case studies are planned on reproductive technologies, technology in neonatology, life-supporting machines, and how medical technology has shaped medical treatment and medical practice. The exchange of ideas, the development of standards and practices will provide insights into the efficiency of health systems, concepts of ‘quality of life', and society as a whole.

2) PhD project 2

Between Care and Social Isolation in the 2nd half of the 20th Century. The Institutional Care for Children with Specific Needs as a Strategy for Social Isolation or Social Integration?

The topic is designed to provide a historical comparison of concepts of children with specific needs in relation to ethical conceptions and normative regulations. Exploration of the intersections of medical and pedagogical treatment, analysis of the relations between the scientific discourses and everyday practices will be central to the research.

3) PhD project 3

Ageing between Home and Institutions in the 2nd half of the 20th Century.

The project will analyse ageing between home and institutions, by tracing changing concepts of elderly and their dependence on cultural contexts, family models, and welfare provisions in different European countries east and west of the Iron Curtain. Case studies are expected to show common tendencies towards the professionalisation of care despite differing cultural traditions and ideological justifications.

The successful candidates are expected to live in Sofia, Bulgaria for the duration of their labour contract, to participate in the scholarly activities of the Department, and conform to the regulations that apply to the position.

According to the Bulgarian legislation the successful candidates will be recruited as researchers and after presenting 70 pages of text and following the appropriate procedure, they will be officially enrolled as doctoral students. This procedure does not change the duration of the contract or the payment within the three-year period.
