The Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) for migration and mobility studies nccr – on the move brings together research projects from the social sciences, economics and law. Managed from the University of Neuchâtel, the network comprises eight Higher Education Institutions in Switzerland. The nccr – on the move promotes equal opportunities, values diversity and fosters an inclusive research and learning environment.

At the University of Neuchâtel we have open positions for 3 Doctoral Researchers (70%)

The preferred start date is on 1 June and no later than 1 September 2022. The funding of the contract is limited to 31 May 2026. Chosen candidates are expected to contribute to a research project on how narratives of crisis influence discourses and policies of migration and mobility under the supervision of Prof. Gianni D’Amato, Prof. Matteo Gianni and Dr. Didier Ruedin. Therefore, the project is built around crisis narratives, how they evolve, and how they affect social behavior (attitudes, discrimination), policies, as well as migration intentions, bridging disciplines as experimental sociology, history and political theory.

One position is focused on quantitative-empirical social research, the second lies at the intersection of history and social sciences, and the third combines political theory with historically informed social science. Quantitative methods of the project include survey experiments, regression analysis, interrupted time series and automated text analysis. Qualitative methods include long-term content analysis, archival research and taxonomic research. Political-theoretical analysis will communicate with both methods to advance normative principles.

Requirements:

  • – A Master degree in one of the social sciences or in history.
  • – A keen interest in interdisciplinary research in migration or immigrant integration.
  • – You have to-date not, or not more than twelve months ago, enrolled as a doctoral candidate at a Swiss University.
  • – Excellent written and oral command of English; knowledge of German and French is an asset.
  • – Excellent knowledge of quantitative or qualitative methods, as well as an eagerness to learn new methods and engage with researchers across disciplines and methods.
  • – Participation in an interdisciplinary doctoral program coordinated by the nccr – on the move.
  • – Interest in collaborations with other nccr – on the move members.
  • – Regular event attendance at the University of Neuchâtel or elsewhere in Switzerland as well as online.

Employer and benefits: The position is based at the University of Neuchâtel. The University of Neuchâtel is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The salary is in accordance with the regulations of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
