The Swiss National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) for migration and mobility studies nccr – on the move brings together research projects from the social sciences, economics and law. Managed from the University of Neuchâtel, the network comprises eight Higher Education Institutions in Switzerland. At the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland (HES-SO), Geneva we have an open position for a PostDoc Researcher (40% or 80%)

The preferred start date is 1 September 2022 (or as agreed upon). The funding of the contract is limited to 31 May 2026.

The successful applicant is expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary research project “Evolving (Im)Mobility Regimes: Migrant Workers’ Entitlement and Precarization in Times of Crisis”, co-directed by Prof. Eric Crettaz, HES-SO Geneva, Prof. Stefanie Kurt, HES-SO Valais-Wallis, Prof. Francesco Maiani, University of Lausanne, and Prof. Eva Mey, Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). The principal research question of how crises trigger restrictive changes in law and policy and affect (im)mobile migrant workers will be investigated from legal, institutional and sociological perspectives, focusing on processes of precarisation. The PostDoc researcher for this position will be supervised by Prof. Eric Crettaz, in case of an 80% position in co-supervision by Prof. Eva Mey.

Requirements:

  • – A doctorate in social sciences (sociology, anthropology, human geography or another related discipline) on a migration-related topic, preferably on disadvantaged migrants with precarious legal statuses, defended no later than five years ago (date of viva voce).
  • – Excellent knowledge of quantitative methods, statistical analysis and interest in mixed methods designs.
  • – Candidates with additional expertise in qualitative methods, and in particular face-to-face interviews, have the option of an 80% position.
  • – High motivation to collaborate closely with the other PostDoc researcher(s) in this project.
  • – Excellent written and oral command of English, as well as of German. Knowledge of French is an asset.
  • – Interest in interdisciplinary collaborations in the framework of NCCR activities.
  • – Regular event attendance at the University of Neuchâtel or elsewhere in Switzerland as well as online.
